[London,, 1789].. Image: 345 by 460mm (13.5 by 18 inches). Sheet: 425 by 530mm (16.75 by 20.75 inches).. Aquatint with etching. A view of The Red Lion, a roadside inn on the Edgware Road at Kilburn. The Edgware Road is a long straight road which runs from Oxford Street to St John's Wood, following the course of the old Roman road heading north out of London to the Middlesex village of Edgware and beyond. There were a number of inns built to serve travellers along the road, including the Red Lion which dated back to the fifteenth century. An example of the print in the Crace Collection bears the imprint of John Cary, and is dated 15 January 1789. John Rathbone (1750-1807) was a prolific painter of landscapes in oil and watercolour. Between 1785 and 1806 Rathbone exhibited 48 landscapes at the Royal Academy, and two at the Society of Artists. Maria Catharina Prestel (1747-94) was an engraver, specialising in aquatint. Born in Nuremberg, she married Johann Gottlieb Prestel in 1772 and was a pupil of…

London,: The Admiralty,, 1857 (additions to 1861).. 995 by 665mm. (39.25 by 26.25 inches).. Engraved chart, inset view of Port Suakin, lighthouses marked in yellow, few nicks and tears to margin, skilfully repaired, not affecting image. This rare chart of the Red Sea is the result of the perilous surveying voyages undertaken by the sailors of the Indian Navy. In order to chart the dangerous waters of the Red Sea, a two-ship hydrographic expedition was launched under Captain Thomas Elwon and Commander Robert Moresby in 1829. Over the course of the following three years, the teams aboard the Palinurus and Benares surveyed the coastline and waters to ensure that the route from Europe to the East Indies was viable for new steam vessels. The diaries kept by crew members offer direct insight into their experiences in the Red Sea. As well as geographical and navigatory details, such as anchorages, fuel supplies and obstacles, these journals tell of the diseases that plagued both ships. One of the principal…

In 1657, Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) travelled to Paris with his brother in response to Louis XIV's summons to the country's artists and scientists to settle in the capital, hoping to make it the centre of European art and learning. Having initially made a living as a sculptor, Jaillot turned to cartography after marrying the daughter of mapmaker Nicholas Berey. At the beginning of the 1670s, he formed a partnership with the sons and heirs of Nicholas Sanson, who had been the most important French cartographer to date; Jaillot set about re-engraving and enlarging many of Sanson's plates, a number of which had never been published. From 1681 onwards, he compiled and published these in his 'Atlas Nouveau' which proved hugely successful, running to numerous editions and translations through the remainder of…

London,: Publish'd by John & Josiah Boydell, Cheapside & at the Shakspeare Gallery Pall Mall,, Sept 29, 1790.. Image: 425 by 597mm (16.75 by 23.5 inches). Sheet: 580 by 740mm (22.75 by 29.25 inches).. Engraved print. The Gordon Riots broke out across London in June 1780 in protest at the Papists Act, passed two years before. The Papists Act had lifted a number of the Penal Laws in Britain, which discriminated against Roman Catholics. The Protestant Association in London, led by Lord George Gordon, marched on Parliament along with other protesters to present a petition against the Act. The disturbance spread, resulting in the destruction of Newgate Prison and the Clink, and the escape of the prisoners. After several days, troops were sent against the rioters. The print was made after a painting by Francis Wheatley, commissioned by the publisher John Boydell. It shows a specific incident during the Riots, when the house of a rich Catholic Irishman, Mr Donovan, was attacked and looted. Troops arrived…

Edinburgh,: James Watt,, 1759. 530 by 740mm. (20.75 by 29.25 inches).. Engraved map, loss to upper left and right corner, skilfully repaired in facsimile, old folds strengthened in a few places. An extremely rare map of the River Clyde with an interesting family history. During 1750s, the Glaswegian authorities were engaged in a series of abortive attempts to improve the navigability of the river Clyde. Port Glasgow, which had been developed as a key trading hub after the 1707 Act of Union, was facing increasingly dangerous levels of silt deposit, as well as mounting competition from the nearby port of Greenock. Following a range of fruitless schemes, civil engineer John Smeaton proposed plans for a lock system that would enable larger ships to pass through the waters of the Clyde. Smeaton's plan was met with opposition from other neighbouring towns, and so the magistrates of Glasgow ordered a further survey in 1758. Alexander Wilson, from the observatory at Glasgow University, headed up this…

London,: Publish'd by J. & J. Boydell, Cheapside and at the Shakspeare Gallery, Pall Mall,, 1789.. Image: 378 by 648mm (15 by 25.5 inches). Sheet: 463 by 745mm (18.25 by 29.25 inches).. Engraving with aquatint and original hand colour. The Woolwich Dockyard was founded by Henry VIII in 1512. It quickly became the centre of shipbuilding in the country, expanding to include a ropeyard and an ammunition store. The print was made just before the yard saw a resurgence in production during the Napoleonic Wars, which required renewed naval strength from Britain. Unfortunately, even during the reign of James I Woolwich's location began to cause problems. The silting of the Thames prevented the launch of James's warship Royal Prince. By 1869 the Royal Dockyard was closed. The Boydells published three other plates of royal dockyards in the same year. Robert Dodd (17481815) was a British marine painter and aquatint engraver, known particularly for his great depictions of the naval battles of the Napoleonic…

[London],: 152 Regent Street,, [c1837-1849].. 75 by 115mm (3 by 4.5 inches).. Prints,""Manning, Late Carbery. Plumassier to her Majesty Queen Dowager P is for Plumassier Engraved trade card. The demand for elaborate feathers to adorn hats, dresses and other accessories begot a huge surge in the plumasserie industry during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This in turn led to intensive hunting of certain birds, even causing the decline or disappearance of some species; indeed, such was the impact on the avian world that associations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds were established to oppose it. At the end of the nineteenth century, there were nearly eight hundred houses in Paris employing six to seven thousand plumassiers, often dealing with only one type of feather at a time. During the same period, London's plumasserie industry was largely concentrated in the East End. It was certainly a lucrative business, with £500,000 worth of ostrich feathers were imported into…

A view of the General Post Office in the City of London, showing the mail coaches departing. The Post Office was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and built between 1823 and 1829, suggesting that the print was made soon after to celebrate its opening. The British Library holds copies by a further two different publishers, suggesting that the print was popular. James Pollard (1792-1867) was a British painter well known for his sporting and mail coach scenes. BM 1917,1208.2253 and 1873,0712.534 (different publisher); LOC 96507261; Selway 47.

Paris,: Chez Pierre Mariette, rue S.t Iacques a l'Esperance,, [1658].. 457 by 572mm. (18 by 22.5 inches).. Hand-coloured engraved map. The second state of the plate, published separately, and extensively corrected with the addition of: the four cardinal points added midway along the graticule scale around the map; 'ou Saycock a io [10] Roy.mes' and'ou Tokoesi a 4. R.'; and additional titles for the 'kingdoms' throughout the map. Hubbard points out that this is "an enormous number of corrections for the engraver, Somer, to make", although many other errors remain. Briet (1601-1668) came from the same town, Abbeville, as Nicolas Sanson (I), and examples of this map have been found in composite atlases largely made up of maps by Sanson. Sanson and Mariette, who published this map, also had a business relationship that eventually ended badly. The engraver, Jan van Somer, worked for Sanson in Paris. A Jesuit from 1619, Briet was also a teacher of humanities and rhetoric. He wrote literature, as well…

Description:
[St. Petersburg, c1893].. 360 by 410mm (14.25 by 16.25 inches).. Lithograph map in two colours. This extremely rare map depicts the spread of the Russian Cholera Epidemic of 1892, which officially claimed 267,800 lives. The map is one of only a handful of Cholera maps to have been printed entirely in Russian Cyrillic, and was lithographed in St. Petersburg not long after the outbreak by C. de Castelli. The map embraces the western two-thirds of the Russian Empire, extending eastward just past Lake Baikal. The Russian Cholera Epidemic of 1892 was part of the Fifth International Cholera Pandemic (1881-96), and as shown here by a series of red arrows, the epidemic first entered Russian territory from Persia. From there it travelled across the Caspian Sea, through the Caucuses and then up north-westwards across the Steppes to infect Kiev, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Warsaw. Next, the epidemic wheeled eastwards, travelling across Siberia, almost as far as Irkutsk. Russia was especially vulnerable to…
