The book has some minor soiling at the ends of the spine and edges of the boards. The jacket spine is slightly sunned, and there is a small (1/2") closed tear at the top of the rear panel. The edges and ends of the jacket spine are slightly rubbed. Inscribed by the author: "For Jim, best wishes, John Updike" on the front endpaper. Even with the flaws described, this is an extremely desireable copy of the author's most coveted book. Tight and square, with no names or other markings internally, in a bright first issue dust jacket with the $4.00 price on the front flap.

Foredge of the page block is lightly spotted, as are the rear endpapers. The jacket is very slightly spotted around the edges of the flaps and has a little rubbing at the corners of the spine. Blue/green quarter spine over black cloth with bright yellow lettering on spine and bright yellow topstain. Publisher's $3.50 price at top of front flap. Signed by the author on the title page. A very nice copy of this auspicious debut.

The pages are somewhat browned and the outer edges of the page block are spotted. The front cover is creased and has a couple of small pulls. Includes illustrations facing every page of text. 425 pages plus 4 pages of ads for other Big Little Books. "Based on the Famous Newspaper Strip".

NY: Henry Holt & Company, 1914. First Edition . Hardcover. Near fine lacking a dust jacket. Dark blue cloth is very slightly worn at spine ends and corner tips. Inscribed "with the compliments of the author" and dated in 1914 on the front endpaper.

NY: Viking Press, 1961. First Edition . Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. The book has minor soiling to the white cloth at spine ends, and a faint erasure on front endpaper. The jacket has a little rubbing on the front flap fold, tiny chips at spine ends, and a little creasing and wear mainly at spine ends. An important association copy of this novel, inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "For Marshall -/Who liked a good deal/of this, and understood/the rest. With many thanks/Peter/Jan. 3, 1961". Marshall Best was an editor at Viking in the late 1950's through the 1970's, ultimately becoming Viking's chairman. He undoubtedly worked with Matthiessen on this novel, as well as earlier novels Matthiessen did for Viking. The date of the inscription is very early for this book, as the official publication date was January 26, 1961

The title page has an erasure impression below the date. 24 short verses, each with a facing sepia illustration by the author.

Some loss of paper on spine and edges of boards, and a small tear at the bottom of the spine. Interior signatures are loose, but still attached. Very clean interior, with no names of other markings. A tight and square copy.
