First edition. [Gernsheim 425]. Illustrated with a curious mixture of photographs, chromolithographs, and woodcuts. The English architect Seddon's two trips down the Rhine with its numerous mediaeval and Gothic castles as well as his friendship with Ruskin heavily influenced his architectural designs for Gothic revival in England. photographs are by Cundall and Fleming, in addition there are seventy illustrations in the text. The publisher's green and gilt binding was most probably designed by Seddon. Recased, else very good.

A quality catalogue containing "photographs of good garden, and some of the things that will help make them good." Illustrated with views that include a variety of landscape work from the 1930s for country houses and suburban dwellings. Wood's also provided swimming pools, stone bridges, lawn tennis pavilions and glasshouses. The final pages include illustrations of gates an fencing in both wood and wrought iron. Originally founded as coal merchants at Wood Green in London, the company diversified into supplying horticultural sundries in the 1890s. By 1914 the firm had developed into horticultural specialists and in 1924 moved to Beechw Works at Taplow, Buckinghamshire. By the time the present work was published they had gained the appointment of both George V and the Prince of Wales together with the sobriquet of "The Harrods of landscape designers.
