Kansas City and Indianapolis: The Sadler Co., 1908. Wraps. Good. Catalogue for mostly postal boxes, some with barred windows for transacting postal business, and also money order cabinets. Fixtures on sale are generally substantial. Oblong, 19.5 by 27 cm. 24 pp., plus wraps. Scarce, no copies listed on OCLC. Condition: small tear and chip on cover, front and rear -- no loss of content. Shallow fold where catalogue formered folded.

Pescia: Stamperia di Gio. Tommaso Masi e Compagni, 1782. Half Calf, Marbled Boards. Good Plus. 4to. [8], 112 pp. The most interesting aspect of the book is the selection of Greek epigrammatic verses translated into both Latin and Italian. With a few handsome pictorial vignettes as well. The leaves are very heavily toned, and some foxing in addition. Chip on the spine, and the leather is dry or goupy elsewhere.

N.d., circa 1930s. Oblong album, 29 by 34 cm. 17 samples, including the one on the front cover, and one sample which is essentially repeated, with minor variations. Stylistically there is considerable variety, from folk art-ish and cartoon-ish to more fluid and fluent Art Deco stylized imagery. We don't know whether Méry was the artist or the name of the company, or both, but clearly these are samples of commercial artwork. That is not pejorative, for the images are delightful, evocative and even humorous and fun at times. Here there is the further intensification of the original watercolors. The papers the large square watercolors are laid on are brittle, as the norm of such albums. Chipping to thw wax paper pastedown on the cover.

Celle, Germany: Chr. Hostmann Steinberg'sche Farben Fabriken G.M.B.H.. NA. Fine. A high Art Deco sales promotion for paint colors. 27.5 by 19 cm. Depicted in a highly stylized illustration is a Deco tower with trees in the foreground, and a kiosk in the center. The ad's text is as follows: "Plakat-Farben von eminenter, beständiger Leuchtkraft ein Erfolg besonderer fachmännischer Bemühungen".

Bruxelles: Myncke Freres Lithographie. Cloth. Very Good. Colorful album of every type of paper pasted onto a wine and liqueur bottle. We haven't counted the number of samples, but there are easily 1,000 pieces of such paper, with 120 pages with labels, seldom less than half a dozen on the page, and often well over that number. N.d., early to mid-20th century. Oblong 4to. 38 by 36 cm. The printing process for many of the labels was chromolithography. The style was widely varied, as the printer surely wanted to demonstrate its range. Sometimes the samples include an actual company, or vinyard name, but most often the labels are generic, with the company name and other relevant information to be added. We are confident this is a salesman's sample book, and not merely a collector's album, because there are generally small stamps mounted next to the label or group of labels with a stock number and a price. Philadelphia: American Book and Bible House, 1901. First Edition. Cloth Folio. Very Good. With some prospectuses (on separate pink sheets). All contained in a cloth folder. 4to. 25 by 19 cm. Some spotting with color loss on the folder. Edgewear to the boards within. A few loose leaves in the text of the last of the six items. Otherwise a wonderful relic of the erstwhile book trade.

France. Hardcover. Cloth spine. Leatherette boards. Screw binding. . Very Good. Many beautiful designs attractively rendered in watercolors, with a mix of floral designs, Chinoiserie, and a sparer Modernist sensibility. N.d., circa 1940s. Small folio, 32.5 by 28 cm. 64 leaves with content, 25 of which feature the watercolors, the balance of 39 having one or two mounted photos each. Tissue guards in front of most of the watercolors and many of the other leaves. We do not know who the artist or designer was, or what company is being represented, but it is our strong belief that this was a collection of designs created for one company, and the album was a working salesman sample catalogue, with specifications for lamps and lampshades sometimes written in long-hand, with varying degrees of detail. Nürnberg: Trautner. Hardcover. Paper pastedown on slightly limp boards. . Very Good. Early depiction of General Washington in Germany -- possibly the first such. N.d., circa late 1780s. (We can date these generally to the late 1780s because Frederick the Great's death in 1786 is noted but Joseph II is still presented as alive, but he died in early 1790.) Folio, 32 by 20 cm. 33 pages with mounted content, including 15 double paged plates measuring 32 by 38.5 cm or thereabouts. The sixteenth plate is double paged half the page height -- this plate was somewhat crudely cut, probably in half. In these plates there are about 345 separate images, or cells -- the cell count is not hard and fast, as there are instances in which two cells can be regarded as a single illustration or cell. The vast majority of the cells, or illustrations, relate to military men, and many of these are equestrian images, with the commander or officer mounted on horse. Berlin: Neufeld & Henius, 1909. Very Good. 4to. 64 pp, with pages behind plates left blank. Every page has an illustration, with many color plates, and text illustrations are also in color. Spine cloth, which had a few short tears, repaired. Pages age toned but otherwise clean and handsome. Light wear on binding.

1893. Cloth on boards. . Very Good. 35 by 24 cm. 38 color plates, including title, which is double paged. Genre scenes -- depictions of daily life in Japan, of people from all walks of life. Helpfully a prior owner created small cards with English translations of the picture titles. These are loose but all present. Some scattered light foxing. Moderate wear to fabric of binding. A tape repair to inside of binding, front board. Still, the images are bright as can be and deliciously vivid. The pictures invite one in, and are of a breathtaking beauty.

Amsterdam: Presso Severo Protomastix, 1696. First Edition thus. Full Vellum. Near Fine. N.d. Circa 1690. 12mo. 160 pp. Woodcut ornament on title. (Brunet IV 1390. 12mo. Gamba 2071) Contemporary vellum. Front joint repaired. Slight separation of lower rear joint. Restoration to upper corner of leaf pp 93/4. P. 107 with awkwardly cut margin. Considerable toning especially around text, but overall fine other than issues mentioned. Rosa is best known as a landscape painter but he also in his lifetime has a considerable reputation as a poet. His eventful, picaresque, and now mythologized life centered at various times around Naples, Rome and Florence. As a champion of artistic freedom, Rosa rejected the then prevalent patronage system in the artworld. In the satires Rosa attacked aspects of the music and art scene, and the most famous of the satires, "La Babilonia", took daring swipes at the clergy, leading to its placement on the Vatican's Index of prohibited works.

Keller. 8vo - over 7¾. 4 parts in 3 volumes and complete of Rabener's Satires, a format then in vogue and influenced by Juvenal and other Classic authors. Set includes several copper engraved plates in each volume, generally meant to be amusing, along with title illustration. Bound in attractive full calf with gilt decoration around perimeter of boards and five raised bands on spine. Spines are a bit dry; leather healthy on boards. Some shelfwear and rubbing along edges and along gutters. Some scattered soilage to pages, yet overall tight and generally clean interiors.
