London, New York and Toronto: Hodder and Stoughton, 1911 A very good copy of the first trade edition - undated but 1911 in the original decorative cloth binding with 25 colour plates and numerous designs and in text illustrations by Hugh Thomson. This was one of series of lavish quarto illustrated editions, produced by Hodder annually in the run up to Christmas. Thomson was a sought-after illustrator, whose decorative binding designs still stand out today. The cloth binding with beautiful gilt decoration to front board and spine, is bright and clean. The spine is slightly faded with some light mottling noticeable towards the base, and has light pulling. The back board has some fading with a white cloth line at the top edge. The top front corner is lightly bumped. The decorative endpapers are in bright clean condition with an armorial bookplate with the name Manning to the front pastedown. The fep has some browning. London : Sidgwick and Jackson, 1973 1st edition thus. An omnibus volume containing the following 6 stories: Operation Terror, Checkpoint Lambda, and Invaders of Space - by Murray Leinster; and The Crack in Space, Dr Futurity, and The Unteleported Man by Philip K Dick. With the original dustwrapper. The wrapper has some fraying to edges and a little mottling on the spine and back cover. It is in protective wrap. The cloth binding is nice and clean but with a hollow area to the spine caused by the width of the book. The contents are very clean and in very good condition. Edinburgh: Jacobi Kniblo, Josuae Solingensis & Johannes Colmarii, 1684 A good copy of this scarce work, in later full cloth binding with 22 illustrations on 20 plates. Robert Sibbald (1641-1722) was born in Fife and qualified as a physician after study in Leiden and Paris. He was appointed as the first Professor of Medicine at Edinburgh University and became Geographer Royal in 1682. He had a particular interest in creating frameworks for proper study - the proper institutions and evidence base. This work 'The Illustrated Essay of the Natural History of Scotland' is a systematic review of the natural resources of Scotland - from the weather to geography, geology, plant and animal life - including disease and local cures. This copy has a sound but worn rebacked cloth binding with gilt titles and date to spine. Edinburgh: Ednburgh University Press Ltd, 2006 A good to very good copy of the 1st edition. In very clean condition with some turning to cover corners - small crease to front cover corner tip. Light marking to bottom page corner tips visible when book is closed.

London : Methuen & Co Ltd, 1946 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original blue cloth binding with title to spine. Produced to War Economy Standards. The boards are bright and clean with some areas towards the base that have a matt surface rather than a shiny one. Small bump to the top front corner and light wear to spine ends and corners. There are 2 ink signatures to the fep and a pencil note about a binding error: pages 113 to 128 are bound back to front and upside down. Apart from that the contents are complete, sound and very clean. There are numerous illustrations in the text, some full page black and white illustrations, and 16 photographic plates at the rear.

Edinburgh and London: Maclachlan & Stewart; Bladwin, Cradock & Joy, 1823 A very good copy in 6 volumes dating from 1823-1828, with 360 hand coloured plates. Robert Kaye Greville, 1794-1866, had medical training but an assured income allowed him to choose a more diverse life in science and art, and in his public work - where he became a leading voice against slavery. He published his Scottish Cryptogamic Flora in monthly parts, intending it to complete the catalogue of flora in Smith and Sowerby's English Botany. He drew all the specimens himself and these drawings together with the detailed text, form a comprehensive picture of the scottish cryptogamic flora as it was in the early nineteenth century. London: Odhams Press Limited, 1963 A very good copy of the 1st UK edition in good wrap. The book is in very clean and sound condition. The binding is bright with a slight warp to the boards and fading at the board edges. The contents are very clean with light spotting to the foredge and light spotting to the half title and p 160. The wrap is price clipped and has some edge nibbling and an old repair. The inside of the wrap has some spotting.

Edinburgh: Charles Elliot, 1787 A fair copy in contemporary half leather binding. The binding has wear and scuffing and has lost its title label. The spine has the remains of gilt lines and blind stamped designs. The leather is fragile at the spine ends with fraying and loss. There is wear to joints. The marbled boards are scuffed with some paper loss at the edges. Corners worn. Contents: initial blank; title with signature of Allan Duncan Stewart; dedication with further signature; advert 2pp; index 1p; text pp 1-348. There is a stain at the top page edge from the fep to the advert, and a lot of brown spotting in the margins from p 282-290 and 346-8. Otherwise text is clear and clean with occasional marks and spots.

London : Charles Harper, 1700 A good copy of the Seventh Edition, with Additions, of the Second Part of Cowley's works bound with the Second Edition of the Third Part - his Six Books of Plants. In 1800's quarter leather binding with marbled boards and title label with gilt compartments to spine. The spine is worn at the joints, particularly at the front (some splitting starting at the top), and with wear at the top spine end with some fraying. There is wear to edges and corners. The binding is currently sound. Page edges yellowed. Armorial bookplate of Edward Cheney (1803-1884) the art collector, and water colour painter of Badger Hall, Shropshire to front pastedown. Newcastle: Emerson Charnely, and Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820 A good copy of the large paper 1st edition in contemporary half leather binding. This edition was printed on thicker high quality paper. With frontispiece portrait of Thomas Bewick, 4 portraits of Bewick by different engravers, and numerous engravings to illustrate the Fables. Contents: frontispiece; title page with small ink signature to top dated 1824; advertisement; Memoir; Catalogue; portraits; table of contents; select fables - pp1-332. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands to the spine and marbled boards. Page edges lightly marbled. The binding has wear to corners and the top and bottom of the spine but is in very good clean condition. There are some faded areas to the foredge marbling. The original endpapers are present. The preliminaries and the frontispiece are very spotty, and the frontispiece has a small repaired section in the gutter. Edinburgh: John Grant , 1911 A fair set of the Winchester Edition version of Sense and Sensibility in 2 volumes. In original blue cloth binding with gilt decoration and titles to spines. Top page edges gilt, remaining edges untrimmed. Vol I with a frontispiece portrait of Austen. Vol I 276 pp; Vol II 286 pp. Classed as 'fair' because, although the bindings are sound, the spines are very dulled with mottling, creasing and some pulling. Boards generally clean. Contents overall in very good clean condition: the untrimmed page edges in Vol I are fairly browned with some fraying where the edges protrude and some marking on p 100; in Vol II the fep is attached to the front pastedown for about a 1 cm strip vertically down the book, very small tear to side of title page.

With half titles, showing that they were volumes I and II of Brimley Johnson's series; colour frontispieces; decorative title pages; listing of illustrations; and text with head and tailpieces. Volume I has a listing of Austen's novels together with a short biography. All the plates are present as called for and are tissue guarded. In the original red decorative cloth binding designed by A A Turbayne. Aeg. The binding has intricate gilt decoration to front board and spine. The front board is very bright with a small bump to the tip of the bottom corner and light rubbing to the top corner. The spine is slightly dulled and with some pulling to the ends. The back board has a few small paler marks at the side edge; a small indentation at the top edge; light rubbing to the top corner and a light bump to the bottom corner. The decorative yellow endpapers are present without inscriptiions. There is light spotting to the free endpapers and to the rear pastedown. The contents are very clean and bright. The tissue guard to the frontispiece is spotty and browned and there is some darker toning and light spotting to the frontispiece and the title page where the tissue guard lies across them. In original green decorative cloth binding with gilt design on front board and spine. The binding is clean with bright gilt to the front board and spine. It has been professionally rebacked so is sound and tight. There is slight marking at the bottom edge of the front board and some very slightly paler areas on the back board. Corners with light wear. The original green endpapers are present with an inscription dated Xmas 1908 to the fep. There is some light foxing to the half title. Contents in very good condition being very clean with some light toning to page edges. The plate at p11 has a small corner crease and the tissue guard to the plate at p126 is creased.

LONDON : Hodder & Stoughton, 1919 A good copy of the larger format edition - undated but 1919 - with 40 tipped in colour plates by Edmund Dulac. In original blue decorative cloth binding with gilt design on front board and spine. The binding is very clean with bright gilt to spine and front board. The spine cloth is slightly dulled and there is light cloth wear at the spine joints. Spine ends with some pulling. Corners with some wear to cloth. Both bottom corners with some fading - more extensive on the back board. Back board with a couple of small white spots. Light wear on edges including a couple of scuffs to top edge. Original endpapers present without inscription. Contents clean and complete with very bright tissue-guarded plates. Text is unpaginated with light brown to very pale foxing throughout. Stitching is sound - backing visible between pp 16/17 and 24/25. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. Boards measure 28.4 x 21 cm.

Dublin: Royal Dublin Society, 1983 A near fine copy in very good dustwrapper. The wrapper has some light edge wear with a little marking and is in a removable plastic wrap.The black cloth binding is in very good clean condition. There is a dedication to 'John' on the front endpaper signed by 'David'. There is an offprint included - 'John MacCulloch's 'Millstone Survey' and its Consequences' 1984 by David A Cumming and that is also signed - so the David is the author of the offprint. The 'John' is John Bate, poet. Contents otherwise near fine.

Kirkwall: W R Mackintosh, the Kirkwall Press, 1957 A near fine copy of Robert Rendall's third volume of verse in a very good wrapper, with his signed inscription at the front endpaper. The inscription is particularly nice because it is in the form of a small poem to his two cousins, John and Jean, to whom he gave the book. The book has a bright clean binding with slight fading to the bottom edges. Contents are very clean with just some faint foxing spots to preliminaries. The jacket has a browned spine with slight loss at the spine ends. There are small edge tears with no loss. It is in a removable protective wrap.

Undated but 1914. Unusually this copy is in its original box and wrap. The box has titles and a pasted plate to the top of the lid and titles to the side. It has some browning and a little grubbiness and some repair at corners. The book is in its original film wrap. The light brown cloth binding has a printed flower design (which continues on the endpapers) overlaid with gilt decoration and titles on the front board and spine.
