Description:
[London], 1839. Lithograph by Shotter Boys. Printed in colours by Charles Hullmandel, deluxe edition, trimmed to the subject as issued, mounted on archival mount. A very fine image from Boys' 'Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen &c': ''a work of exceeding beauty' (Abbey) and one of the most important in the history of English colour-printing. This print represents part of what was the first serious challenge to the supremacy in England of the hand-coloured aquatint. The plates in Boys' Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen &c 'are produced entirely by means of lithography: they are printed with oil-colours, and come from the press precisely as they now appear.' As detailed in the Descriptive Notice, it was strictly stipulated by the publisher that no colour be added, and goes on to state that previous attempts at chromolithography had suffered from an unnatural flatness 'whereas in these views, the various effects of light and shade, of local colour and… Read More

Washington D.C.: Published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1920. Large folding nautical chart, printed on heavy paper stock. Colored. A rare original coastal survey of the Texas-Louisiana border area along the Sabine Lake and Pass into the Gulf of Mexico encompassing a portion of the Golden Triangle Area including Port Arthur and Sabine Lake. Established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was the United States' first civilian scientific agency. This agency has followed its mission to survey the U.S. coastline, create nautical charts of the coast, and help increase maritime safety since its founding, and has often played fascinating roles in significant chapters of U.S. history. It served in all theaters of the Civil War in the service of the Union Army and Navy, pioneered acoustic exploration in the wake of the sinking of the Titanic, and during WWI it worked to detect enemy submarines. Description:
London, 1980. Lithograph. Number 2 from an edition of 4. Signed by the artist in pencil, lower right. Very good condition apart from a mild surface abrasion in the lower right corner of the sheet. A lively early print by the progressive contemporary British artist David Ferry. A printmaker and photomontage specialist who has lectured and exhibited his works worldwide, David Ferry was born in Blackpool in 1957. After studying at the Blackpool College of Technology, he trained at the prestigious Camberwell School of Art and Crafts and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His first solo exhibition was held at the 1984 International Contemporary Art Fair at London's Barbican Centre, and he made his first significant U.S. debut in 2000 as a visiting professor at Southampton College, New York with an exhibition entitled David Ferry from the window seat at the Avram Gallery. Description:
London: Harding, 1802. Aquatint, coloured by hand, on laid paper (watermark '1802') (Publication line at foot of plate shaved with slight loss, some expertly repaired tears to margins). An anonymous work of quality. Unusually, the present work does not include either the artist responsible for the original or the engraver who worked on the plate. The publication line is very faint: sometimes an indication of a later issue, but the early watermark does not support this. None of the standard reference works include either this print or mention of the horse Sacripant. This suggests that this image is rare, and the absence of names allied with the early watermark may indicate some sort of proof issue.

Description:
London: Messrs. Fores, 1890. Photogravure, coloured by hand. A fine copy of this excellent image of the 1890 Derby winner, trained by J. Watts and ridden by J. Porter. Alfred Charles Havell was a member of the Havell family which included John James Audubon's engraver and printer: Robert Havell, Jr. Alfred Charles Havell first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878 and soon afterwards took up commissions with Messrs. Fores to record important racehorses of the day for subsequent publication. This connection continued through until his death in 1928. 'All his pictures provide a valuable record and link in racehorse portraiture between... Harry Hall... and the work of James Lynwood Palmer, Alfred Grenfall Haig, F. Mabel Hollams and Nina Colmore, all of whose main output came at the beginning of this century' (Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp.115-116). Charles Lane British Racing Prints p.116.

Description:
London: J. Braill & Son, 1890. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand. A fine copy of this excellent late example of the racing aquatint. The heyday of the racing aquatint in Britain was probably about 1830, but the present example shows that the art had not died out, even sixty years later. The print is unfortunately unsigned, but, aside from the process used, the style of painting is charming and recalls the work of John Frederick Herring and his contemporaries.

London: William Miller, 1809. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by D. Havell after Henry Salt, on wove paper (watermark 'J Whatman'). View of the British colonial island St. Helena prior to its becoming Napoleon's last residence Henry Salt, artist, traveller, diplomat and collector of antiquities, was born at Lichfield, Staffordshire, England 14 June 1780. He was destined to be a portrait-painter, and on leaving school was taught drawing by Glover, the watercolour-painter of Lichfield. In 1797 he went to London and became a pupil of Joseph Farington, R.A., and (in 1800) of John Hoppner, R.A. The turning point in his career was 3 June 1802, when Salt left London for an eastern tour with George, viscount Valentia (afterwards Lord Mountnorris), whom he accompanied as secretary and draughtsman. He visited India, Ceylon, and (in 1805) Abyssinia, returning to England on 26 Oct. 1806. He made many drawings, some of which served to illustrate Lord Valentia's Voyages and Travels to India, published in 1809.… Read More

[Denver, 1880. Image size: 9 7/8 x 13 inches. On period card mount, measuring 17 3/4 x 14 inches, with a period manuscript ink and floral border. Early photograph of Santa Fe. Jackson began his career in photography in 1858, working as a retouching artist in a studio in Troy, N.Y. In the 1860s, after serving briefly in the Union Army, he worked at several studios in Vermont before moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1867 where he established his own studio. He worked on an extensive series of views for the Union Pacific Railroad, which earned him enough notice to be recruited by Ferdinand Hayden for the U.S. Geological Survey team. With the Survey, Jackson explored and photographed vast areas of the West, including Yellowstone and parts of Colorado, Montana, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Jackson's artistic growth as a landscape photographer evolved and quickly matured when he was hired by Hayden. Influenced by Thomas Moran, a painter on the survey, and photographers C. R.
