Following the author's two-page note to the reader, the main text occupies six chapters presenting the entire process surrounding communion: matters one needs to consider, actions one needs to take and words to be spoken, all when deciding one has a duty to take communion, resolving to actually do so, being admitted, preparing for communion, taking communion and reflecting on the communion afterward. An appendix following the main text (pp. 84-92) contains hymns, added for the first time in the present edition. (Arabic text).First edition of a collection of proverbs written by Abu al Qasim Mahmoud ibn Omar al-Zamakhshari (1074-1143), a medieval Muslim theologian, linguist, poet and interpreter of the Quran from a region in Central Asia, present-day southwest Turkmenistan, in the original Arabic with a German translation. He was nicknamed “Jar Allah” (God's neighbour) and is best known for his work Al-Kashshaf, an interpretation and linguistic analysis of Quranic expressions. Al-Zamakhshari was a Mu'tazilite scholar of the Islamic Golden Age. The present first edition of his work was published as a New Year's gift for the friends and fellow orientalists of the editor-translator, Freiherr Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall. All prints were engraved by the Austrian painter, draughtsman and engraver Siegmund Ferdinand von Perger (1778-1841), at the request of the Master of the Horse (Oberstallmeister) Johann Nepomuk Joseph Norbert Grafen zu Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg (1780-1834). The five full-blood Arabian horses are after drawings made in Baghdad by the British merchant and antiquarian scholar Claudius James Rich (1787-1821) of horses in his own possession, with their pedigrees and other details in the captions below. Unique harness maker's colour-drawn sample book, with each drawing depicting a horse in elaborate carriage horse tack. The drawings were executed by Michael Fölsch himself, one of the foremost Viennese makers and sellers of luxury tack in the early 19th century, to show prospective clients possible designs for their carriage horses. Each drawing is signed by Fölsch as artist. His talent for draughtsmanship and colouring was hitherto unknown and is remarkable for a leather craftsman who probably never received training as a painter. [12], 260, [1] ll.Third (and last incunable) edition of a classic work by Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), in the original Latin, on the epistles of St. Paul, providing a profound explanation of the teachings of one of the most eminent theologians of the Catholic Church. The first edition, edited by Pietro Malduro or Petrus of Bergamo (ca. 1400-1482), appeared at Bologna in 1481 and apparently served as the model for the second at Basel in 1495. The Basel edition is by far the most common, and probably served as the model for the present edition (the prologue appears to be the same, though the “Petrus Bergomensis”, explicitly credited in the Basel edition, is not named in the present edition. Drawing from the texts of the New Testament, Aquinas addresses various issues that pertain to the moral conduct of a devout Christian, making this work a valuable resource. But the manuscript doesn't merely copy the printed book: at least much of the text differs and also at least some of the tabular data, and some of the figures also have no direct equivalents in the printed book (also not in later editions, as far as we have seen). Hollander, who also put the three works together. The fact that De Vries’s manual went through eleven editions, the last published in 1818, testifies to the popularity and usefulness of the book. We find only two copies of this rare 1812 edition in WorldCat, one in the Delft University of Technology Library and one in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.Ad 2: Mathematical work by Evert Floryn (1752-1819), a mathematician and (hydrographic) surveyor, with many tables of trigonometric functions and logarithms, printed as stereotypes. Written by Thomas Canner. Another Dutch edition from the same year was published in folio as part of Van der Aa's Wijdberoemde voyagien na Oost- en West-Indiën. The first is an account of the second English voyage to New England (only after that of Bartholomew Gosnold) by Martin Pring. In 1603 he reached the coast of Maine then known as Virginia. The second is the account of Bartholomew Gilbert who was sent by Sir Walter Raleigh to search for the lost colonists of the Roanoke settlement in North Carolina, then known as Virginia, but was killed by Indians. Remarkably, the majority of the birds, snakes and other animals described here, are described by the same indigenous names as those used by Jacob Haafner in his Reize te voet door het eiland Ceilon (1754). Lithographed by Johannes Hilverdink (1813-1902) after sketches of Everhardus Koster (1817-1892). Both artists are best known for their marine paintings.The work was commissioned by "Arti et Amicitae", the Amsterdam society of visual arts, to help Koster who just had lost one of his eyes, which could be the end of his artistic career. [2], 380 pp.First edition of "one of the most interesting of the Dutch 19th century books on West Africa" (Bulletin d'information) by the Dutch military physician Jan Simon Gerardus Gramberg (1823-1888). Gramberg arrived at Fort Saint George in Elmina (São Jorge da Mina) in 1856, where he explored the coast and inlands of the Gold Coast. Later he founded a cotton plantation on the Bossum-prah (Pra) river in present-day Ghana. The book is divided into three parts. In the first part Gramberg gives a concise description of West Africa: its history (with remarks on the Spanish and Portuguese properties there) climate, geology, religion, education, flora, fauna etc. As a physician, Gramberg included some interesting information on common diseases in the area. [8], 168 pp.First and only edition of the Dutch translation of an eye-witness account of the disaster that befell the frigate Méduse one of the most infamous shipwrecks of the age of sailing ships. It was also one of the worst examples of leadership in history, where panic drove out every vestige of common sense. Two survivors, J.B.H. Savgny, a surgeon, and Alexander Corréard, a naval officer, wrote a widely read book about the incident, and the episode was immortalized when Théodore Géricault painted “Le radeau de la Méduse” (The raft of the Medusa), which became an iconic artwork of French Romanticism.The incident quickly became a scandal in French politics and Bourbon officials tried to cover it up. Captain Chaumareys was tried and found guilty of incompetent and complacent navigation and of abandoning the Méduse before all her passengers had been taken off. J.B.H. Since the 1640s Ludolf had been working in Gotha in the diplomatic service of Duke Ernst I of Sachsen-Gotha, who encouraged his Ethiopic studies, and since 1675 in the service of his son and successor Friedrich I. He is best known for his monumental history of Ethiopia, Historia Aethiopica (Frankfurt, 1681, with supplemental works to 1694).
