During the 1920’s, Rev. Frederick Hayward was active in the Christian League of Methuen and as well as being an avid local historian, writing the Merrimack Valley Fact a Day column for the Lawrence Telegram. In many ways, this exhaustive history of the First Congregational Church of Methuen, Massachusetts mirrors the history of the City of Methuen. It lovingly covers the very early history of the town, the ministers and the various meeting houses, including the splintering and later absorption of the Second Parish, and the many generous endowments of the devoted Congregation members. The Appendix contains a complete census of Deacons and Roster of Members up to 1929.

Leverett Bradley Jr. served in the First Massachusetts Heavy Artillery for nearly 4 years and was witness to some of the most intense fighting of the Civil War. At 15 years old he had joined his father?s military unit, as did his eleven year old brother Jerry. During this time the he wrote home constantly. For a person so young his letters were wonderfully written gives the impression that he wanted to share his experiences with those he loved.  Slightly wounded on more than one occasion, Leverett, Jr. survived the war and mustered out as a first lieutenant. Turning to the church he found his calling as a minister in the Episcopal Church and died in 1902. In memoriam, his widow, Susan Hinckley Bradley, privately published these letters and some sermons written in his honor in 1905.

The Story of Mattie Jackson is a powerful and enduring piece of writing, one of the many untold stories of slavery it touches the human soul. Describing the strength and spirit of a slave woman as she carries on after the separation from siblings and loved ones. It echoes a sense of sadness and joy, sadness regarding her years as a slave, but joy from her determination to escape slavery and complete her education. We are enormously fortunate that she wrote of her experiences, so that later generations could read and empathize with her experience. Mattie Jackson, and her family escaped slavery in Saint Louis, Missouri during the Civil War. Later Mattie and her brother moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts to be with her step father. This is that story.

In 1831, the Sumatran pepper trade was both lucrative and dangerous. On a routine trip, the Salem merchant vessel the Friendship, under the command of Captain Charles Endicott, was taken by pirates. Endicott and the escaping crew, made their way to a nearby port, where they met up with other trading vessels, to return and retake the Friendship and rescue the captives. This is Capt. Endicott’s first hand account of the incident written in 1856 for the Essex Institute.  The following year, in retaliation for the Friendship incident, President Andrew Jackson sent the US Frigate Potomac to Sumatra to exact retribution on the pirates and their local leaders. Also included in this volume are both the American Government’s reports of the event, and the report of Irvine Shurbick, Lieutenant commanding the Expedition.
