Description:
Grand Rapids, Mi.: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 72 pp. including one full-page illustration. Publisher's brown textured paper over boards, lettered in gilt. Spine sunned, else fine. An eschatological exploration of Biblical prophecies relating to Zionism and the coming Jewish rule of Palestine by American fundamentalist evangelist Harry Rimmer (1890-1952). An interesting feature of Rimmer's predictions is his conclusion that the Dead Sea will provide the government of Israel with vast and immediate wealth in the chemical deposits of the Dead Sea, which will play a role in the apocalypse: "It is largely because of this vast wealth that Russia and her godless allies will invade that devoted land, just at the dawn of That Day when Jesus shall come again. This will be the reason for the storm of battle that shall yet break over Palestine, the last conflict before the setting up of the Kingdom of Heaven and the restoration of Israel to her ancient place as… Read More

Description:
Paris: Fr. Horth-hemels, 1730. Hardcover. Very good. [10],246 pp. plus frontispiece and two folding tables. In Latin. Early three-quarter vellum and speckled paper over boards, raised bands, manuscript paper title and shelf labels. Early shelf number inscription in front free endpaper, light institutional inkstamp in title page. Lightly rubbed, extremities worn. Very good. George Ernest Stahl’s influential Latin edition of Gideon Harvey’s ARS CURANDI MORBOS EXPECTATIONE (first published in English in 1689). Stahl published both ARS CURANDI and his own critical response, ARS SANANDI CUM EXPECTATIONE, with a combined title page under the heading, SILENI ALCIBIADIS. The present example corresponds with Waller 4082: Harvey’s work alone, issued with the combined title and without a separate ARS CURANDI title leaf. Gideon Harvey (ca. 1640 – ca. 1700) served as physician to Charles II and “physician of the tower” to William and Mary. Despite his connection to the Crown, Harvey was never a member… Read More

Description:
New York: [Privately published], 1995. First Edition. 11 x 8 1/2 inches. [4] leaves (printed recto only). Red printed wrappers, side stapled. Original horizontal fold, else fine. Three New York City-based concretist poems by Eli Wilentz (1918-1995), photocopied from his own manuscripts and privately issued by his family on the occasion of his death. Wilentz founded the legendary Eighth Street Bookshop with his brother Ted in 1947 and owned and operated it until 1979. It was a center of the Beat scene in the 1950s and 1960s - "the very hearthside of hip, the cynosure of cool," as the NEW YORK TIMES called it in Wilentz's obituary. The shop provided a critical meeting space in New York to struggling poets and avant-garde authors, a daring commitment to stocking paperback books and mimeo publications, and, eventually, a publishing arm, Corinth Books. Wilentz had major interests in sculpture, architecture, and the literary geography of New York City, all of which are reflected - in either form or topic -… Read More
