"A few words may be in order," writes Lord Russell, "to mitigate any surprise that might be felt. I do not think that the reader's surprise to find me attempting stories can be greater than my own. For some reason entirely unknown to me I suddenly wished to write the stories in this volume, although I had never before thought of doing such a thing. Pictorial hardcover with no obvious defects, pictorial endpapers, and profusely illustrated throughout in full colour, on crisp, clean and clear paper. Dust jacket shows minor wear, including scuffs and edgewear.

From the DJ flaps:

The history of Scotland is like its landscape—full of peaks and valleys, of ruggedness and grandeur, of gentleness and calm splendor. Its story is inextricably linked with its larger neighbor England, but is completely individual. Although joined by the union of the crowns in the form of James VI of Scotland who became James I of England, there is no doubting Scotland's unique and special place in history. From Bannockburn to Braveheart, Bonnie Prince Charlie to Rabbie Burns, the Scots have proved to be a people whose character and ability have made their world influence disproportionate to the size of their country. This book looks at the many facets of Scotland from its Crown Jewels to its stunning geography… Read More

From the dust jacket:

The Centennial Travel Series

The bracing climate, the heather, glens, moors, lochs and spectacular scenery attracted visitors to Scotland in the late nineteenth century just as today. In the pages of this lavishly illustrated travelogue, the reader will discover for him-self the pleasures of journeys made in the 1880s 'north of the Border'. The author, the Rev. Samuel Green, made many visits to Scotland, and in this volume set down descriptions and opinions of what he saw and enjoyed, providing the Victorian tourist with a perceptive guide to the country — and not neglecting to offer sound advice to the intending sightseer. Description:
xiii, 744 p.; 24 cm. Includes Bibliography (pp. 619-692) and indices (pp. 725-744). Black cloth hard cover with gilt lettering to spine shows some edgewear and minor aging, with light foxing to endpapers, but the textblock is pristine, with no noticed markings, creases, or other defects. Dust jacket is price-clipped and is slightly faded, with wear commensurate with age, including small tears, but is housed in a protective cover to prevent further wear. At times surprisingly lucid, but often (and even hilariously) incorrect, it should be noted that the material contained in this book is extremely dated. Be prepared to encounter such as gems as: "Absolute women homosexuals are more psychopathic than men" (p. 610). From the dust jacket: THE SEXUAL OFFENDER AND HIS OFFENSES represents the first major work on the descriptive and clinical aspects of sexual abnormalities since Krafft-Ebing's Psychopathia Sexualis. It goes far beyond any existing work in charting and establishing the background and clinical… Read More
