Dust jacket with some wear and small tears on spine and upper edges. Contents near fine, jacket very good. Inscribed by Duncan to his friend the photo-editor John G Morris. "November 1969. Morris (born in 1916) is probably the most celebrated living photo-editor. He worked with many of the finest photographers - Robert Capa, Cartier-Bresson and W. Eugene Smith. As the London Picture Editor of "Life" during WWII, he was responsible for editing and publishing Capa's coverage of D-Day. Description:
1972, 1972. Photo silkscreen on graph paper (900x735mm). Inscribed in pencil in the bottom margin "For Francesco - [Signed] Robert Mapplethorpe '73". An early work from an important stage in the development of Mapplethorpe's career. When he graduated from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn in 1969, Mapplethorpe was making mixed-media collages using images torn from magazines. In 1971, he befriended John McKendry, curator of photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. McKendry allowed Mapplethorpe access to the Museum's photography archives and later that year gave him his first Polaroid camera. Mapplethorpe initially used this camera to make material for use in his assemblages but he quickly began making self-portraits and exploring the possibilities photography offered as a medium in its own right, particularly after he met Sam Wagstaff in 1972. Wagstaff probably did more than anyone to ensure that photography began to be taken seriously as an art form in America. This triptych of… Read More

London: Printed for G. & W.B.Whittaker 1823, 1823. 12mo. 180x105mm. pp. xv, [3], 144, [121]-142. This eccentric pagination is noted in the errata. Original grey paper covered boards, original label to spine. Tear to head of spine, rubbing to joints and corners of boards. Internally very good, a few pencil underlinings and marginal annotations and some pages unopened and overall a nice copy of a rare work located by Worldcat in seven UK libraries and none in the US. Henry Kirke White had ambitions to enter the sacred ministry and spent a year studying with a priest in Lincolnshire before entering Cambridge. Southey said of him that never was there a "devouter christian" and that "of his fervent piety, his letters, his prayers, and his hymns, will afford ample and interesting proofs". As will this curious little collection of pen portraits of historical figures and their differing attitudes to death. Kirke White divides the world into "Infidels" and… Read More

Description:
n.p. n.p. 1880-1934, 1888. An archive collection of seven sketchbooks extensively illustrated with, in total, over 500 drawings, sketches and studies by the Arts and Craft architect William Bidlake (1861-1938). The drawings are in pen and ink or pencil. Most are highly worked, detailed drawings of buildings (particularly churches) either standing alone or in the context of more developed street scenes but there are numerous studies of architectural details such as gothic window tracery and column capitals. Landscape scenes also feature and there is a small number of sketches of the human form. The standard is uniformly high throughout and demonstrates Bidlake's mastery of the decorative detail of medieval architecture. The sketchbooks are in a variety of formats but all with hardcovers and, although the covers are worn, they are all in remarkably good condition and internally they are very good indeed with the drawings beautifully preserved. 1. 150x230mm (oblong). 36 leaves with 57 drawings and… Read More

London: Printed by The Aquarium, Woburn Walk 2004, 2004. First edition. 232x155mm. pp. [viii], ii, [2], 235. Green cloth with illustration (by Childish) stamped in black to upper cover. Pictorial dustjacket with same portrait illustration in white, black and brown on upper cover. Endpapers decorated with a repeated sea-horse design. Some marking to dustjacket and a small stain to foot of spine but overall in very good condition and internally it is immaculate. Billy Childish is a genuinely counter-cultural figure. A writer, artist and musician he made his name as part of the Medway Poets, a punk performance poetry group based around Maidstone where he was at art college in the late 1970s. As a painter, he was a founder of the Stuckists and his disturbing style owes much to early twentieth century German Expressionism. His father was a convicted drug smuggler and Childish (who is dyslexic) was sexually abused as a child by a family friend and this trauma forms the point of departure of this dark… Read More

London: Brickhill and Bateman 1865, 1865. Slightly expanded English edition following the American edition of 1863. 179x118mm. pp. 50, [i]. Some creasing to the corners but otherwise this fragile item is in very good condition. Illustrated with engravings. Despite the flaws in this copy, this is a good copy of a rare work which is not often found in its English edition. This is an eccentric work in pamphlet form about Charles S. Stratton, also known as General Tom Thumb (1838-1883), who was a dwarf who worked at Barnum's Circus. This biography tells of the complicated love arrangements between Stratton, his friend Commodore Nutt and Lavinia Warren. Nutt, also a dwarf loved Lavinia but she chose to marry Thumb.
