An early work from an important stage in the development of Mapplethorpe's career. When he graduated from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn in 1969, Mapplethorpe was making mixed-media collages using images torn from magazines. In 1971, he befriended John McKendry, curator of photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. McKendry allowed Mapplethorpe access to the Museum's photography archives and later that year gave him his first Polaroid camera. Mapplethorpe initially used this camera to make material for use in his assemblages but he quickly began making self-portraits and exploring the possibilities photography offered as a medium in its own right, particularly after he met Sam Wagstaff in 1972. Henry Kirke White had ambitions to enter the sacred ministry and spent a year studying with a priest in Lincolnshire before entering Cambridge. Southey said of him that never was there a "devouter christian" and that "of his fervent piety, his letters, his prayers, and his hymns, will afford ample and interesting proofs". An archive collection of seven sketchbooks extensively illustrated with, in total, over 500 drawings, sketches and studies by the Arts and Craft architect William Bidlake (1861-1938). The drawings are in pen and ink or pencil. Most are highly worked, detailed drawings of buildings (particularly churches) either standing alone or in the context of more developed street scenes but there are numerous studies of architectural details such as gothic window tracery and column capitals. Landscape scenes also feature and there is a small number of sketches of the human form. The standard is uniformly high throughout and demonstrates Bidlake's mastery of the decorative detail of medieval architecture. Some marking to dustjacket and a small stain to foot of spine but overall in very good condition and internally it is immaculate. Billy Childish is a genuinely counter-cultural figure. A writer, artist and musician he made his name as part of the Medway Poets, a punk performance poetry group based around Maidstone where he was at art college in the late 1970s. As a painter, he was a founder of the Stuckists and his disturbing style owes much to early twentieth century German Expressionism. Tan full morocco, upper cover decorated with lavish gilt frame at the centre of which is an art nouveau design. Below this frame is a smaller oblong panel with borders tooled in gilt, inside which is the title in gilt. Lower cover is simply decorated with a gilt double fillet with leaf motif cornerpieces. Spine with five raised bands, compartments richly decorated in gilt, second and third compartments lettered in gilt. Silk endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a slip case (also by Riviere) covered in dark green morocco. About two inches of this covering is missing from the top edge. The spine is lettered in gilt and indicates that this is a "Cosway Binding". Some creasing to the corners but otherwise this fragile item is in very good condition. Illustrated with engravings. Despite the flaws in this copy, this is a good copy of a rare work which is not often found in its English edition. This is an eccentric work in pamphlet form about Charles S. Stratton, also known as General Tom Thumb (1838-1883), who was a dwarf who worked at Barnum's Circus. This biography tells of the complicated love arrangements between Stratton, his friend Commodore Nutt and Lavinia Warren. Nutt, also a dwarf loved Lavinia but she chose to marry Thumb. New York Palomar Pictures 1972, 1972. The Post Production script of Shaffer's screenplay for Joseph Mankiewicz's "Sleuth" starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. The whole is in very good condition bound in metal clips with a beige card cover. There are a couple of splash marks (coffee?) on the front cover and a small tear to each of the bottom corners of the cover with minor loss. Otherwise, this is a nice copy.

Chocolate brown and cafe-au-lait cloth in the original near fine dust-wrapper. Some light creasing to rear. In mylar wraps. Cracking to joints just before the appendix. A crucial work for anyone interested in the development of suburbia or metro-land. The book gives full details of the types of houses then springing up around all of England's major cites in the post-WWI effort to create 'homes fit for heroes'. Of particular interest is the fully costed appendix on houses in Welwyn Garden City, giving an insight into the development of the garden cities and New Towns.
