Swenson, Howard. Swenson, Howard. S.S. MT. VERNON. Woodcut, 1940. Edition of 25. Titled, numbered 3-25, and signed and and dated in pencil. 5 x 6 7/8 inches. In excellent condition. Howard Swenson 1901-1960 was born in Illinois. He studied at the Corcoran Scool of Art in Washington, and worked in Chicago and in Washington, DC as a sculptor, decorator and graphic artist. He worked with the WPA, designed the bronze handles for the doors of the Senate, and his work was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery and the Rockport Art Association.

Pierce, Danny. SAD SOLOIST. Edching, 1958. Signed and dated in pencil. Edition size not known. 11 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches (plate), 16 1/2 x 13 inches (sheet). Excellent condition. Daniel P. (Danny) Pierce (September 10, 1920 - March 6, 2014) was a painter, printmaker and sculptor. He taught printmaking at several universities, and wrote, illustrated and printed his own books at The Red Door Press in Kent, Washington. Danny Pierce (1920-2014)was a book artist who produced books entirely on his own; "he writes the text, handsets the type, cuts the blocks, handprints editions of 25 to 100 copies, and constructs specially designed boxes for each volume, creating works with a deep, personal quality." (Preface to "Danny: 36 years at the Red Door Studio," a 1995 exhibition at the University of Wisconsin). He was also a printmaker. He taught book arts and printmaking at the University of Alaska and the University of Wisconsin.

Lacking the two etchings, as moted above, and with the back cover of the wrapper of the book split partway, else the whole, including the box, in very good condition.

Benson, Frank. SALEM HARBOR. Paff 1. Etching, 1882. Edition of about 1500. Unsigned, as always. 4 7/8 x 7 7/8 (plate), 8 1/4 X 11 5/8 inches (sheet). In very good condition except for four breaks at the bottom edge from removal from the magazine in which it was published. Paff states: "This etching was made as the frontispiece for the second number of "The Art Student," a magazine published by "Students in the School of Drawing and Painting, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston," and of which Mr. Benson was one of the editors. The plate was steel-faced about fifteen hundred impressions were printed." "Mr. Benson had just read Lalanne's treatise on etching, and Salem Harbor was the result of the interest aroused by the book. Except four or five experiments immediately following, of which no impressions have been traced, he did not etch another plate until 1912..." Harriet Gene Roudebush was born in Portland, Oregon on July 6, 1908. She and her family moved to Sacramento, California in 1916. She studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts (1925) and for four years on a scholarship at the California School of Fine Arts. She was known during the 1930s and 1940s for her etchings of the San Francisco Bay Area, which were sold in tourist shops and art galleries at Fishermen's Wharf. She and her husband moved to Pacific Grove (a well-known California artists' colony) in 1972. She discontinued printmaking and etching, and instead became a watercolorist, painting watercolors of the Monterey, Carmel, and Pacific Grove areas, until her death on January 2, 1998.
