Description:
Paris: Iacobum Kerver, 1551. First Thus. Seventeenth century full calf embossed in gilt and blind, rebacked with five raised bands. Measuring 165 x 104mm and collating [20], 240, [4]: lacking front endpaper else complete with occasional mispaginations. Heavily illustrated with 195 woodcuts throughout. Rubbing to binding extremities and spine label removed. Early ownership markings defaced on title page. Occasional toning and soiling throughout, but generally a presentable copy of this Kerver bi-lingual edition of an early work on hieroglyphics. The first Kerver bilingual edition. Praz contends that the interest in hieroglyphs among the humanists began with this work. The cuts are attributed to Jean Cousin or Jean Goujon, and this series first appeared in the French edition of 1543. In this edition, seven of the 1543 blocks have been replaced with new blocks that were slightly, or entirely, redesigned.

A widely admired play, both within India as well as the rest of the world due to its influence on Goethe. .

Description:
London: Longman, Green & Co, 1900. First edition. Near Fine. Finely bound in three-quarters morocco over marbled boards. A Near Fine, complete copy, with a previous owner's name on the half-title. Churchill's only major work of fiction, Savrola is a melodramatic tale of political unrest, dictatorship, and revolution in the fictional Mediterranean state of Laurania. "To the contemporary critic, Savrola would have seemed merely one more romance that The Prisoner of Zenda had made so popular after 1894. To the modern reader, Savrola is a significant revelation of Winston Churchill in his mid-20s. It is the day-dream of a man of action...not all the artificiality of romance can deprive this book of authentic vitality when it is read with the knowledge of what one day its author would become" (International Churchill Society). Description:
San Francisco: Alex Wofsy Fine Arts, 1991. Later edition. Reprint authorized by the trustees of J.R. Abbey and Dawsons. Four folio volumes measuring 310 x 232 mm. Faux leather with gilt to spines, all in Fine jackets. Collating xx, 399; xxi, 428; xiii, 299; xiv, 301-675: complete, including 633 illustrations. A pleasing set in all. Drawing from his own collection, Major J. R. Abbey producied the following representation of landscape and architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. "I have, for over a quarter of a century, been collecting books on the Scenery of Great Britain and Ireland, illustrated with aquatints or lithographs published between the years 1775 and 1860. In this Bibliographical Catalogue, the word 'Scenery' is not strictly confined to landscape but includes architecture, and urban and social scenes. I have found it a fascinating subject and a field in which there seem to have been few serious collectors. Many of the illustrations are of real beauty, and the fact that a large number… Read More

Description:
New England, 1880. Quarter roan over pebbled boards ruled in gilt. All edges marbled. Measuring 200 x 165mm and containing 81 pages in a single hand. Several sections have been neatly excised from the notebook -- likely unrelated school content from other classes, to ensure that the present notebook focused on math and science lessons. We've been unable to pin down precisely which Annie J. Doran this manuscript was owned by (a number of Irish immigrants and first generation women by this name resided in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and New York during this period, according to Census records); however, in the absence of a specific creator, the notebook nevertheless sheds light onto the American educational system, and the type of STEM training being provided to young women in the lead up to the nineteenth century. The neatness of the present notebook suggests that it was not used in the classroom but, rather, was a fair copy created by Annie for study purposes. Clearly written and organized, she… Read More

Description:
London: Cassell and Co. Ltd, 1954. First editions. Near Fine. A lovely set bound by in three-quarter black morocco over black cloth boards, top-edges brightly gilt. Complete with all maps and plates. The six volume classic includes: The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; and Triumph and Tragedy. Gilt lions to the spines have rubbed and faded. Churchill's immensely popular history of The Second World War. Churchill's work is, unsurprisingly, mostly focused on the British perspective of the conflict - and the book is as much memoir as it is history. Churchill was already a well regarded and popular writer when he ascended to the Prime Ministership in 1940, and he made no secret of his intention to one day write a history of the conflict which was only then beginning. "I will leave judgments on this matter [World War 2] to history, but I will be one of the historians." Interestingly enough, Churchill was permitted by Clement Atlee and the… Read More

Description:
[Pekin, NY], 1909. Secretary's ledger with half calf over cloth, measuring 9 x 7 inches and comprised of 133 manuscript pages bound and one sheet laid in loosely at rear. Documenting the meetings, finances, elections, inductions, and deaths of members from 1903-1909 of a local chapter of the influential Women's Christian Temperance Union which sought to protect women and families from the violent effects of alcoholism as well as to address social ills harming women in all areas. At its foundation in 1873, the Women's Christian Temperance Union aimed to lobby for social temperance and for alcohol bans to protect women and families from the violent effects of alcoholism. In 1879, under the national direction of Frances Willard, the WCTU adopted as its motto "Do Everything." By this, the WCTU meant "that every question of practical philanthropy or reform has its temperance aspect" (WCTU). The overarching organization had branches addressing Work Among Immigrants, Health, Non-Alcoholic Medication,… Read More

Description:
[n.p.], 1830. Comprised of 7 pages in ink in a single hand, containing six works of poetry. Dark blue printed wraps over lined paper, measuring 7x 6 inches. Ownership signature of Mrs. Russell to header of front wrap. Scattered foxing and some dampstaining not affecting text. Text block loose but holding. In all, an intriguing glimpse into a woman's use of literature to express her own preoccupations with humans' place between nature and the divine. The six poems contained in this slim volume appear to have been thoughtfully selected and carefully copied out. Indeed, among them exist several thematic threads that teach us about the elusive Mrs. Russell, who leaves no identifying information except her ownership signature. The first poem, The Silent Expression of Nature, first appeared in the religious collection Musae Biblicae (1819) before being reprinted in Pierpont's National Reader of 1829, which was designed to provide teachers with reading exercises in class and copy exercises out of class.… Read More

Description:
Dresden, London, 1903. Comprised of 20 handwritten pages, 13 original sketches and watercolors, 3 musical notations and 3 loose photos of young women. A truly lovely example, bound in recently rebacked quarter cloth over sheep with gilt floral endpapers. All edges brightly gilt. A reminder of how easily women's stories and lives can be lost to history, the present album carries no ownership signature or explanation of what drew its young women contributors together from across major cities in the U.K. and Europe. What the notebook does preserve, however, are the names of a group of women including Adelaide Smollets, Hilda May Sides, Eileen Shea, Winifred and Edith Maude Tweedie, Margaret Monnypenny, Nina Barken, Cissie Daice, Kathleen McArthur, Mabel Weir, Violet Henley, and Dorothy Dudgeon who were drawn together on these pages through their literary and artistic contributions. Beautifully copied quotations from William Shakespeare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Adelaide Proctor mingle with tributes… Read More

Seattle, WA: Mill Mountain Press, 1975. First edition. Near Fine. Powder gray wrappers, with titles stamped in dark brown on spine and front cover. Collating complete: [9], 44, [1]pp; illus. Hint of sunning to spine, with faint strip of subtle fading along upper edge of front wrapper. Very Near Fine. Stanford's haunting and incisive collection came toward the middle of his brief career, and it carries the hallmarks of a maturing poetic voice. No longer a novice writer, Stanford had come into his own by this point; his sense of rhythm and imagery brings the reader into intense contact with ideas of death, solitude, and angst. Poems like Tryst, Humming This Song Trying to Remember the Way Another One Goes, and Slow Rag of the Yearbook reveal a preoccupation with those difficult moments that can never be fully put into words. One of seven titles he would release through the Mill Mountain Press prior to his suicide in 1978 at the age of 29, with four illustrations by artist Ginny Crouch Stanford… Read More

The trip was documented by photographer Michael Montfort, who captures the author with all of his humor and humanity. Bukowski notoriously hated having his photograph taken, but was charmed by Montfort. The photographer described their first meeting: "It was a 1977 cover story for a German literary magazine named Rogners....I was scared shitless to meet the guy because of his image.
