A new set in the publisher's wrapping as received directly from The Folio Society. Carefully unwrapped to check for flaws, of which none have been noted. Commemorating the centenary of Ernest Shackleton's death, The Folio Society brings together 'The Heart of the Antarctic' and 'South' - thrilling accounts of his greatest polar expeditions in his own words. Published together for the first time, Ernest Shackleton's two polar memoirs are gripping accounts of adventure at the very limit of human endurance. 'The Heart of the Antarctic' (1909) and 'South' (1919) tell the story of the Nimrod and Endurance expeditions - both of which fell short of their goal, but saw Shackleton defy overwhelming odds to save his men from catastrophe and bring them home. This commemorative three-volume set includes the complete texts from… Read More

London: Folio Society, 2021. First Edition Thus, Second Impression Second Printing. Hardcover. New. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Pemberton, Simon. A new copy of this superb collector's edition, as received directly from The Folio Society. In 1914, Ernest Shackleton set out to complete a transcontinental journey from sea to sea, crossing the South Pole. However, when the Endurance became trapped in ice just one month after leaving South Georgia, his mission was doomed. The ship coasted for miles and finally sank, the crew and what supplies they could retrieve drifting in lifeboats before arriving at the remote and barren Elephant Island. With no hope of rescue, Shackleton made the difficult decision to set off with five other men in one of the lifeboats and make the perilous 800-mile sea crossing to South Georgia to raise the alarm. Written in concise, fast-moving prose by the captain of the Endurance, 'Shackleton's Boat Journey' reads as a gripping adventure and is… Read More

Published in this edition by FS in 2018, this is the first and only printing. Captain Scott led two expeditions to the Antarctic: on the ship Discovery in 1901-4 and the Terra Nova in 1910-13. He and his men waited out the long months of winter darkness carrying out scientific research and then used the brief summers to explore the uncharted continent. To entertain themselves during those interminable winters, expedition members created a magazine - the South Polar Times. Typed up and illustrated with expedition members' own text, paintings, sketches and photographs, each issue was read aloud to all hands. Published in partnership with the Royal Geographical Society, the British Library and the Scott Polar Research Institute, this large format Folio edition (11" x 8¼") is the complete facsimile of… Read More
