Andrea in Mantua was the final architectural work by Leon Battista Alberti the great fifteenth century Italian humanist. It became known as a seminal w of the Renaissance. Johnson's monograph on the building is exhaustive, using all known documents related to the building. It is well-illustrated with photographs, plans, and measured drawings.

He also published regularly for magazines such as Forest and Stream and Atlantic Monthly. He is considered b many critics to be a regionalist and a folklorist.
