William Henry Fleming graduated from the University of Georgia in 1874 and served as superintendent of the Augusta and Richmond County Georgia public schools from1877 until 1880. He gained admittence to the state bar and began a law practice in Augusta. From 1888 to 1896 Fleming served in the Georgia House of Representatives and was the Georgia speaker of the House in 1894 and 95. He was also the president of the Georgia State Bar Association 1895. These speeches were made during Fleming's political career and the last speech, "Slavery and the Race Problem in the South" which was an address given at University of Georgia in 1906, was published as a stand alone pamphlet in 1906. Most of the Agricultural information previously used in the South was based on European research, most of which were not adaptable to the southern soil and climate. The University of Georgia established a small experimental reseach farm in1873, run by a Professor of Chemistry at the University, E. M. Pendleton. Two years later Professor Pendleton published this book, written for the Agricultural students at the Unversity of Georgia, one of the very first such textbook published in the United States.
