Red Skelton entertained television viewers for 20 years. In 1969 Skelton wrote and performed a moving monologue about the Pledge of Allegiance during which he commented on the meaning of each phrase of the pledge. He performed the monologue for President Richard Nixon at the first "Evening at the White House," a series of TV entertainment events honoring the recently inaugurated president.
