A thriller novel by Morton Freedgood, writing under the pen name John Godey. The novel's title is derived from the train's radio call sign. When a New York City Subway train leaves to start a run, it is given a call sign based upon the time it left and where; in this case, Pelham Bay Park station at 1:23 p.m. After the 1974 movie adaptation was released, for many years the New York City Transit Authority barred its planners from scheduling trains leaving Pelham station at 1:23 AM or PM, realizing that it would become too much of a reminder to the public. Eventually this policy was rescinded, but due to the superstitions involved, dispatchers have continued to avoid scheduling a Manhattan-bound train to leave Pelham at 1:23 (Courtesy Wikipedia).

In Good Plus condition, light soil on wraps but still shows nicely, light edge-wear, slight lean on spine, hinges becoming fragile. Nice bold signature. From the estate of book collector Albert Raman who attended the short-lived Eisenhower College, where one of the buildings was dedicated to Bob Hope, a regular visitor to campus. It's almost certain Albert Raman had these books signed personally. Bob Hope's first book and self-published book is a lot of fun - his personality leaps from the page.

Large oblong hardcover (10 x 13 x 0.75 inches), 144 pp, an ambitious work including the short story "Photographic Memory" by Jeffrey Eugenides, an 82 page "Photographs" section mostly featuring full page or cross page images, "Exhibition and Selected Bibliography". Boards are decorated with abstract chromogenic prints. In Near Fine condition with only slight ding on top edge of front board, and minor scratching to same board. A monumental work in many ways.

The jacket features the same images except with an embossed "Jane Addams Children's Book Award" sticker. NEW, unread book. Condition is Fine in Fine. Surrounded by federal marshals, 6-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first black student ever at the all-white William Frantz Public School in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 14, 1960. Sepia-toned period photographs join the sidebars in rounding out Bridges' account. But Bridges' words, recalling a child's innocence and trust, are more vivid than even the best of the photos. Like poetry or prayer, they melt the heart.
