Description:
Berkeley: University of California, 1917. First Edition. 8vo, publisher's blue cloth, 225 pp. Some bumpting to boards and fading to title on cloth, very good plus overall. Very Good. A unique association copy of Richard Tolman's work on relativity, published early in his career before his involvement in the technocracy movement and his later more influential Relativity, Thermodynamics, and Cosmology. This copy is inscribed to the mathematician William Duncan MacMillan on the front free endpaper, likely after its publication as MacMillan assumed professorship in 1919 after his military career ended. Very uncommon inscribed, this being a nice association copy.

Description:
V.p., 1910. Ink on paper, each sheet approx. 9 x 7 in., 1-4 sheets each, variously paginated, one with orig. envelope. Celebrated American Beaux-Arts sculptor Frederick MacMonnies (1863-1937) studied with Augustus Saint-Gaudens and many of his best commissions emerged from his relationships with Saint-Gaudens and the architect Stanford White. He lived primarily in France but traveled frequently to New York and was part of a circle of artists that formed around White at Edwin Booth's Players Club in Gramercy Park and the Saint-Gaudens summer colony in New Hampshire. Artist Thomas Dewing was another Saint-Gaudens student and MacMonnies' close friend. Two of the three letters discuss an important commission for the Players Club: a memorial sculpture for famed actor Edwin Booth. The memorial became a flash point for changing American tastes and a harbinger of MacMonnies' declining fortunes. His original proposal was an elaborate and symbolic design at odds with the new fashion for modern and simplified… Read More

Description:
Chicago, 1915. Gelatin silver photographs, three measure 8 x 10 inches, one measures 6 x 8 inches. Two bearing stamps of the Orpheum Studio, Chicago, one with stamp from C.J. Pairing and Company. All with editorial marks to verso. Some marks, pin holes and wear, about very good condition overall, with sepia toned photographs attractively preserved. Very Good. A scarce survival of the early days of Hawaiian music in the United states, these four studio photographs were produced in Chicago for the Peterson and Vierra Dramatic Concert Company, who toured the United States briefly in 1914-1915 at the advent of the Hawaiian music craze. Scant information on the group is available save for early newspaper accounts. The group was led by a J. Kilali Peterson, who according to contemporary accounts was originally with the Bird of Paradise production, which was highly influential in bringing Hawaiian music to America in 1912. According to a contemporary account of the show, Peterson was billed as "The premier… Read More

Description:
New York, et al., 1915. Silver gelatin prints, roughly 8 x 8, 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 inches, the last on a larger mount. Very Good. In 1914, Francis Red Fox James, now presumed to be related to the Blackfoot tribe, rode a horse across the country seeking states' approval for an American Indian national holiday. He delivered endorsements from 24 states to the federal government, but a commemoration never materialized. The Washington Herald reported that James rode 4,000 miles from a Crow reservation in Montana and was received by President Wilson to discuss the possibility of a "national Indian's Day" in October. (Washington Herald, 12/16/14) Although his mother was probably Blackfoot, James claimed Native American heritage only as an adult. He changed his name by adding "Red" and later "Skiuhushu" to Francis Fox James. Two of the images in this collection contain familiar tropes of American Indian portraiture but the third offers an arresting image of James holding the American flag aloft as a kind of… Read More

Description:
New York, 1950. Three photographs measuring 8 x 10 inches, menu measuring 10 x 3 3/4. Cab Calloway and his band began performing at the Cotton Club in 1931, enjoying an initial three year stint with many sporadic returns in the subsequent decades. Calloway's manager, Irving Mills, played a large part in marketing Calloway's music to a white audience. Nate Sloan, in "Constructing Cab Calloway, Publicity, Race, and Performance in 1930s Harlem Jazz," writes: "Cab Calloway was of the most popular jazz musicians of the 1930s and 1940s whose legacy today is complicated by his repertoire of novelty songs with references to minstrelsy, his residency at a segregated Harlem cabaret, the Cotton Club, and his marketing to white audiences by manager Irving Mills. Calloway's sound and persona-commercial, racialized, theatrical-did not square with an emergent art discourse around jazz during the 1930s. Hit songs like "Minnie the Moocher" (1931), with its dark, minor sound world, exaggerated depictions of seedy… Read More

Description:
Colorado, 1884. Albumen photographs measuring 7 ½ x 4 ½ inches on larger mounts. Some chips to mounts, occasional foxing and spotting, good to very good overall with very good contrast. Good. Three early photographs of Colorado taken by an unknown photographer in the early 1880s, taken shortly after the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad made Durango and Silverton more accessible to Euro-American settlement. D&RG had chosen Durango as the site for a settlement to reach Silverton and the San Juan Mountains. One image shows a group of miners, with one identified on the back as John Ward. The region would boom in population in the years following the railroad, largely from emigrant workers who came to the area to work as miners. We find no other record of these images.

New York, 1940. Watercolors on paper affixed to later illustration board, 14 x 26 inches each. Very Good. An attractive set of images from the Robert Moses era in an unknown hand. The images show proposed intersections including two that were never built. The images include "Proposed Parkway Passing over Entrance to Fort Totten," which shows an overpass on the Cross-Island Parkway in Northeast Queens, dated October 1937; "Linden Boulevard Overpass at Southern Parkway," showing an unbuilt intersection at North Conduit Avenue and Dumont Avenue, perhaps in the Ozone Park neighborhood, undated; "Woodbine Street Passing over Long Island RR to Metropolitan Ave & 67th St.," which shows a non-existent intersection near the Middle Village stop on the M line, dated August 1940. Interesting relics from the Robert Moses era, which shaped the infrastructure landscape of New York City. American, 1860. 3 ½ x 2 ¼ inches, uncased. A striking image, featured on p. 79 of David Deitcher's Dear Friends: Photographs of Men Together, 1840-1918. Images of men together from the nineteenth century do not necessarily suggest a sexual relationship, as Deitcher explains in his book, but rather a show of intimacy within the very separated realms of the sexes. Description:
Edinburgh: Scots Magazine, 1773. First Edition. 8vo, [450] - 504 pp, disbound from larger collected volume, complete. Contents fine, binding split, very good. The first appearance of Phyllis Wheatley's "On Maecenas," published in September, 1773, the same month that her Poems on Various Subjects was headed to the printer, and likely predating the form in its collected version. The introduction to the poem reads "The first, but not superior to some others of the negro girl Phillis Wheatley's poems." Poems on Various Subjects was printed in 1773, with some copies being sent to Boston on the Dartmouth, which was one of the targets of the Boston Tea Party - though the books were spared as the protesters were only interested in the tea onboard." In To Maecenas (1773) this black poet, whose writing and publishing activity was wholly unprecedented, tried on a series of identities she had encounteredin her reading of classical authors, in a transparent quest to identify and formulate a poetic persona… Read More

Description:
Dayton, 1910. Broadside on newsprint measuring 19 x 7 ½ inches. Fine condition. Fine. An unrecorded broadside advertising two products - called Victory Bullets and Victory Powders - to help stop smoking. The company, a Victory Remedy Co., of which we find several records circa 1910, guarantees the products' success. The broadside, printed in the style of a newspaper, shows a series of fictitious horrors committed by smokers, with macabre illustrations. Some of the episodes involve death from tobacco use directly, the others warm of boy murderers, shooters, insanity from smoking, and a farmer who is stricken with 'tobacco heart.' As the scientific research on smoking was clearly not very advanced at this point, the broadside is an uncommon example of anti-smoking advertising, which would of course become much more common later in the twentieth century.

Description:
Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1796. First Edition. Good. The first bilingual edition of Pinckney's Treaty of San Lorenzo, which ended the West Florida Conflict by establishing an amicable agreement between Spain and the United States for the navigation of the Mississippi River. Thomas Pinckney signed as a representative of the United States, and Manuel de Godoy signed in the name of Carlos IV of Spain. The agreement's effects were far reaching, as the ceded land that became the Mississippi Territory - particularly the Natchez region - formed a gateway for the United States expansion into the Southwest by destabilizing Spanish power. A landmark treaty, uncommon in its first bilingual edition. Rear wrap and final leaf detached, and lacking the passports. Worming and chips to wraps, contents well preserved, good condition overall. Other photographs show women's fitness activities at the Lakewood Community Center, also in Cleveland. There are several examples of similar local efforts in support of the national "Keep Fit for Victory" Campaign. The photographs show women in a range of activities - basketball, stretching, calisthenics, volleyball, etc. Some of the photographs are graphically hand-painted by the editorial staff. Description:
New England, 1970. Two plastic albums, 10 ½ x 11 inches. A lovingly arranged and annotated product of someone's obsession with New England's churches. Nearly all photos 3 ½ square. A few of the churches have multiple photos. Most photos are shot from a similar three quarters frontal view, though some are frontal. The repeated perspective shows a respect for the vernacular forms, though it is unclear if the photographer's interests were architectural or historical in nature. The photographer travelled throughout New England, with the breakdown of churches as follows: 206 in Massachusetts, forty-six in Connecticut, forty-eight in Maine, eighty-six in New Hampshire, sixteen in Rhode Island and six in other states. A fine collection, impeccably preserved in the original albums, which read "Memories" on the front.
