This edition of Livy's history of rome was prepared by Carlo Signio (?1524 - 1584) and first appears in an Aldine press imprint of 1755.

Excudebat Iohannes Mercerius, 1629. 4to, 233 x 162 mms., pp. [xi], 44, 69 [70 blank, 71 - 84 Index], 430, misbound, with the Fragmenta following page 44 and the note to the reader, contemporary full vellum, with yapp edges, and the contemporary inscription on the title-page "Sum ex Libris Cornely van Lodensteyn" on the title-page. This is a rather interesting provenance in that van Lodensteyn (1552 - 1636), the twelfth of fourteen children, was a magistrate in Delft, where he died. Later in the 17th century, his descendants emigrated to New Jersey. This edition of the Satyricon was edited by Theodorus de Juges. The text ultimately derives from one manuscript source, that of Scaliger, and the texts of Tornaesius (1575) and Pithoeus (1577, 1587). Joseph Baron (1859 - 1924) is probably the Blackburn-based poet of that name who often wrote in Lancashire dialect, though he writes in Yorkshire dialect here; he is identified as the author of Ribble-land; its Scenery, History, and Legendary Life; James Sharples, Blacksmith and Artist and other books on the title-page. William Bridges Adams (1797 - 1872) "was an English author, inventor and locomotive engineer. He is best known for his patented Adams axle — a successful radial axle design in use on railways in Britain until the end of steam traction in 1968 — and the railway fishplate. His writings, including English Pleasure Carriages (1837) and Roads and Rails (1862) covered all forms of land transport. Lewis (1775 - 1818) never had quite the success with his other literary endeavours as he had in 1796 with The Monk. These "tales" are ballads in verse, not prose. Scott apparently postponed publishing his own collection of ballads upon hearing that this work was in press, in a letter to James Ballantyne 22 April 1800. Scott, however, contributed three tales to the first volume, and Lewis solicited contributions from other authors, including Southey, as well. The work was often alluded to as "Tales of Plunder" due to its large paper size and the price of one guinea. Todd and Bowden 7Aa.

In the preface, the author refers the founding of the ceremony of the Taurobolium by Julian the Apostate, alluding to the sacrifice of a bull, which was practiced "rom about AD 160 in the Mediterranean cult of the Great Mother of the Gods. Celebrated primarily among the Romans, the ceremony enjoyed much popularity and may have been introduced by the Roman emperor. Coetlogon (?1746 - 1820) published this work in 1806, and this second edition eventually comprised the first volume of his miscellaneous works published between 1807 and 1810 and is blocked "vol. 1" in gilt on the spine.

This copy is likely an association copy twice over, as no doubt the Thomas Wilkinson who inscribed this copy is related to the Abraham Wilkinson who wrote the work, and likely both are related to the Wilkinson family that Joseph Priestley married into when, in June 1762, he married Mary Wilkinson, daughter of Isaac Wilkinson, the "prosperous ironmaster near Wrexham", on whom see David L. This pamphlet gives a glimpse into the nuts-and-bolts process of choosing an applicant for a job in academic philosophy in nineteenth-century Scotland. Our candidate, Adam Semple, appears to have been eminently successful in this instance, as he is known to have indeed been the Examiner in Mental Philosophy at the University of Glasgow from 1873 to 1876 (<http://www.universitystory.gla.ac.uk/biography/?id=WH16217&type=P&o=&start=0&max=99197&l=s>). Among those offering endorsements of Rev. Semple's qualifications are the Scottish philosopher Edward Caird (1835-1908) and one from the influential Scottish logician and poet John Veitch (1829-1894). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 203 x 127 mms., pp. [11] 12 - 102, including title-page and dedication leaf printed twice, disbound; portion cut from top margin of first title-page to remove name. An Independent minister, David Bradberry (1735–1803) spent most of his career in Ramsgate and Manchester; he wrote very little, of which this poem is the best-known work. It was noticed briefly in volume 6 of The British Critic: A New Review: "The first thing which will strike the reader of this extraordinary performance, will be its whimsical dedication, which, but for its length, we would transcribe. It is formally address to the sovereign of the universe. Nor will anyone be less surprised with the singular structure of the verse...." The verse reminds one of Christopher Smart's poems.
