Parisiis, In AEdibus Rouillij, via Iacobca sub signo co[n]cordiae. Cum privilegio Regis. 1565. Small 8vo, 123 x 78, pp. [xxiv], 277 [sic, for 287, 288 blank. 289 - 303 variant readings [3044 blank, 3055 - 318 index], woodcut title-page, with scrolls, column, faces within heartshapes, etc., later (probably 18th century) limp vellum, leather label; some small inkstains on early leaves, some very slight worming, front hinge almost completeLY open, with inner spine exposed. The text has been prepared by Adrianus Turnebus (1512 - 1516), and as Wikipedia notes, "At the age of twelve he was sent to Paris to study, and attracted great notice by his remarkable abilities. After having held the post of professor of belles-lettres in the University of Toulouse, in 1547 he returned to Paris as professor (or royal reader) of Greek at the College Royal. In 1562 he exchanged this post for a professorship in Greek philosophy. In 1552 he was entrusted with the printing of the Greek books at the royal press,… Read More

Description:
Geneva. Excudebat Iohannes Mercerius, 1629. 4to, 233 x 162 mms., pp. [xi], 44, 69 [70 blank, 71 - 84 Index], 430, misbound, with the Fragmenta following page 44 and the note to the reader, contemporary full vellum, with yapp edges, and the contemporary inscription on the title-page "Sum ex Libris Cornely van Lodensteyn" on the title-page. This is a rather interesting provenance in that van Lodensteyn (1552 - 1636), the twelfth of fourteen children, was a magistrate in Delft, where he died. Later in the 17th century, his descendants emigrated to New Jersey. This edition of the Satyricon was edited by Theodorus de Juges. The text ultimately derives from one manuscript source, that of Scaliger, and the texts of Tornaesius (1575) and Pithoeus (1577, 1587). While scholars and critics alike have been generous in their admiration for the narrative, some of the naughty bits were troublesome to an earlier generation, e. g., the German historian Barthold Georg Niebuhr (1776 - 1831), who… Read More

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 186 x 123 mms., pp. [iii - vii]. viii - x [9] 10 - 83 [84 blank], original cloth; title-page very browned, spine chipped at base, with the non-authorial presentation inscription on the front paste-down end-paper from 1930: "From [?Prudence] / With compliments / 17/11/30". Joseph Baron (1859 - 1924) is probably the Blackburn-based poet of that name who often wrote in Lancashire dialect, though he writes in Yorkshire dialect here; he is identified as the author of Ribble-land; its Scenery, History, and Legendary Life; James Sharples, Blacksmith and Artist and other books on the title-page. If I'm reading George Hull correctly, in his anthology The Poets and Poetry of Blackburn (1902), Hull refers to a serialized version of Baron's T'Yorksher Lingo, though not by title, in the closing sentence of this paragraph: "Among the most popular of his published works is his "Blegburn… Read More

William Bridges Adams (1797 - 1872) "was an English author, inventor and locomotive engineer. He is best known for his patented Adams axle — a successful radial axle design in use on railways in Britain until the end of steam traction in 1968 — and the railway fishplate. His writings, including English Pleasure Carriages (1837) and Roads and Rails (1862) covered all forms of land transport. Later he became a noted writer on political reform, under the pen name Junius Redivivus (Junius reborn); a reference to a political letter writer of the previous century" (Wikipedia). Dublin Printed by Nicholas Kelly, for P. Wogan; Printed by William Porter for P. Wogan, 1801. FIRSTDUBLIN EDITION. 2 volumes in 1. Large, tall 8vo, 213 X 132, pp. [iv], 220; [iv], 224, bound in blue binder's cloth, blocked in gilt on spine; title-page volume 1 slightly torn at lower margin, occasional spotting of text, top of spine snagged. Lewis (1775 - 1818) never had quite the success with his other literary endeavours as he had in 1796 with The Monk. These "tales" are ballads in verse, not prose. Scott apparently postponed publishing his own collection of ballads upon hearing that this work was in press, in a letter to James Ballantyne 22 April 1800. Scott, however, contributed three tales to the first volume, and Lewis solicited contributions from other authors, including Southey, as well. The work was often alluded to as "Tales of Plunder" due to its large paper size and the price of one guinea. Todd and Bowden 7Aa.

A good copy, with the bookplate, engraved by Evans, of Robert Cunliffe on the front paste-down end-paper. For this end these poetical tales are calculated, and are a collection purloined from many Authors, as Prior, Swift, Gay, Allan Ramsay, and others, as well as from collections with the same nature as itself." In the preface, the author refers the founding of the ceremony of the Taurobolium by Julian the Apostate, alluding to the sacrifice of a bull, which was practiced "rom about AD 160 in the Mediterranean cult of the Great Mother of the Gods. Celebrated primarily among the Romans, the ceremony enjoyed much popularity and may have been introduced by the Roman emperor. Tall 8vo (in 4s), pp. [7] 8 - 61 [62 blank], contemporary tree calf, gilt border on covers, gilt spine; front joint cracked, lacks label, but a good copy with the autograph "Tho. This copy is likely an association copy twice over, as no doubt the Thomas Wilkinson who inscribed this copy is related to the Abraham Wilkinson who wrote the work, and likely both are related to the Wilkinson family that Joseph Priestley married into when, in June 1762, he married Mary Wilkinson, daughter of Isaac Wilkinson, the "prosperous ironmaster near Wrexham", on whom see David L. Glasgow [?privately printed] 1873. 8vo, 196 x 128 mms., pp. 8, original pink wrappers (slightly soiled). This pamphlet gives a glimpse into the nuts-and-bolts process of choosing an applicant for a job in academic philosophy in nineteenth-century Scotland. Our candidate, Adam Semple, appears to have been eminently successful in this instance, as he is known to have indeed been the Examiner in Mental Philosophy at the University of Glasgow from 1873 to 1876 (<http://www.universitystory.gla.ac.uk/biography/?id=WH16217&type=P&o=&start=0&max=99197&l=s>). Among those offering endorsements of Rev. Semple's qualifications are the Scottish philosopher Edward Caird (1835-1908) and one from the influential Scottish logician and poet John Veitch (1829-1894). Caird actually states, "I do not think we could have a better examiner." How very different from the process many of us who spent some time in a Scottish university experienced. Manchester, Printed for the Author, by G. Nicholson & co...., 1794. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 203 x 127 mms., pp. [11] 12 - 102, including title-page and dedication leaf printed twice, disbound; portion cut from top margin of first title-page to remove name. An Independent minister, David Bradberry (1735–1803) spent most of his career in Ramsgate and Manchester; he wrote very little, of which this poem is the best-known work. It was noticed briefly in volume 6 of The British Critic: A New Review: "The first thing which will strike the reader of this extraordinary performance, will be its whimsical dedication, which, but for its length, we would transcribe. It is formally address to the sovereign of the universe. Nor will anyone be less surprised with the singular structure of the verse...." The verse reminds one of Christopher Smart's poems.
