The first issue of "THENCO" was sent out to over five hundred people, and this second issue reached over five thousand people. U.S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West. Minor staining to the surface. A tribe of the Pai Utes, living on the Kai-bab Plateau, near the Grand Canon of the Colorado, in Northern Arizona. Jack Hillers (1840-1882) was working as a teamster when he made the acquaintance of John Wesley Powell. The following year, 1871, Powell hired him as a boatman for his second expedition down the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon. Over time, he replaced Clements Powell (John's cousin) as the assistant to the photographer (first succeeding E. O. Beaman then James Fennemore). In a beige paper covered slipcase with a tan and black printed title label. Very good condition. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. The slipcase is in good plus condition, with a general layer of mild soiling. Number 1261 of twenty-eight hundred copies printed for the members of Editions Medicina Rara Ltd. on a rag paper manufactured especially for this edition by August Kohler, Oberkirch, West Germany. The plates for this printing were made from a copy of the original 1627 Venice edition belonging to the Wurttembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart, West Germany.
