[Cleveland]: [Printed by B. & R. Printing Co. for] Bérmunkás, [1932]. First Separate Edition. 16 pp. Pictorial wrappers, saddle-stapled. Later inscriptions in Agnes Inglis's hand (see below) on p. [1] noting pamphlet as gift from John Zara to the Labadie Collection. Lower-outer corner bumped, wrappers lightly worn. Very good. A talk, "Technocracy or Industrial Unionism," delivered on Cleveland's West Side for the local Hungarian arm of the I.W.W. by one of its members. The author, Andor Wiener (printed in the pamphlet in the Hungarian style, with surname first), presents the new Technocracy movement of Howard Scott et al., which advocated the replacement of price system-based forms of economy and government with industrial systems designed and maintained by scientists and engineers. Wiener supports the general theories of the Technocrats and belief that their proposed system could successfully replace capitalism in the industrial world but argues that the ideas will remain merely academic if they… Read More

[London]: Lowndes, Printer, [1808]. Broadside, approximately 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, untrimmed. Portion of bottom line of text unprinted. Small remnants of paper tape on verso, else fine. Broadside advertising the twelfth performance of the opera, KAIS, OR, LOVE IN THE DESERTS, at Drury Lane, starring and produced by the renowned English tenor, John Braham. John Braham (ca. 1774-1856) rose from poverty and orphanhood in London to the heights of European opera, where he celebrated as one of the great voices of his age. As a British Jew, he also represented a major shift in Jewish status and social potential in the late Georgian era, becoming not only an artist of acclaim but also eventually the father-in-law of several English aristocrats. KAIS was based on the ancient Arabian love story of Layla and Majnun, which had been adapted into a famous work by Persian Poet Nizami Ganjavi in the 12th century, which in turn became the source for numerous later poets and mystics throughout the Middle East and… Read More

Description:
Moscow: Molodaya Gvardia, 1964. First Russian Book Edition. 351,[1] pp., with several in-text illustrations. Cloth-backed pictorial paper over boards. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Nevertheless, it was a major undertaking, engaging major Russian literary talents of the day, with the still-authoritative translation by Nora Gal (1912-1991) and Raisa Oblonskaya (1924-2010), an introduction by celebrated literary critic Raisa Orlova… Read More

From a stated edition of 226 copies (200 numbered copies for sale, and 26 lettered and not for sale); this copy out of series and unnumbered. The first book publication of two stories Ronald Firbank wrote during his years at Cambridge, which first appeared in Cambridge's undergraduate magazine, THE GRANTA, in 1906 and 1907. In an unpublished memoir of Edward Gorey and the Albondocani Press, Albondocani founder George Bixby recounts approaching Gorey about illustrating the work: "I thought the Firbank stories would be an ideal project for illustrations by Gorey, told him about the stories, and asked him if he would be interested in making some drawings to accompany them. He was immediately interested. 'Firbank is one of my oldest passions,' he told me. In THE BLUE ASPIC, Gorey’s spoof of opera, the hero,… Read More

The book referred to is a real one: SELECT PHRASES IN THE CONTON DIALECT COMPILED (Canton, China: [s.n.], 1930), a now-scarce 54-page guide to Cantonese words and phrases for speakers of English, from which apparently all of the phrases in the present two works are drawn.
