The Mahavidyas are: Kali, Tara, Sodasi, Bhuvanesvari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Matangi, Bagala, and Kamala. This the first mention anywhere in print of the long lost Tarot deck created by Austin Osman Spare in 1905 or 1906. With the possible exception of some of Spare’s friends and associates, nobody knew the deck existed. In 1944 Spare entrusted the deck to the conjuror Herbert J. Collings, one of the founding members of The Magic Circle, a British organization dedicated to the history and promotion of conjuring and stage magic. Fascinating work concerning fire eating, sword swallowing, miracles with spikes (including driving a spike into your head), eating glass, walking through fire and more. What could possibly go wrong?

Self published, 1989. No edition stated. Stapled wrappers. 10 pp. Illustrations. This booklet may have come with an electronic device which is referred to in the text (a beeper). If so, it is not present here. Very good. An updated version of the Talking Skull, The Spirit Bell, and Laser Beam, all rolled into one. The tricks and gags presented here involve a "beeper" which makes sounds during tricks, some used with a watch.

Red cloth with gilt stylized borders and title to front, gilt titles to spine. Numerous black and white plates and illustrations. Spine is sun faded but gilt titles fully legible. Light rubbing to cloth. A solid, very good copy. This is arguably Levi's finest work. Originally issued in French with the title: ‘Dogme et Ritual de la Haute Magien’ in 1856, the book consists of XXII chapters and is divided in two parts; the first covers Doctrine (theory), the second Ritual (practice). The work covers almost every aspect of Ritual Magic. Waite also provides a biographical preface. A classic work of occult literature.

A good to very good copy of this scarce volume. Includes a complete explanation of Downs' world-famous coin creation, "The Miser's Dream," as presented by him at the Palace Theatre. London, for nearly 200 consecutive performances.

The early years of the 20th Century were a time of great creative ferment for Spare, and amongst the items which survive from these early years are two intriguing and sumptuous grimoires, each of which is a notebook consisting of fine pen and ink and watercolor drawings. These notebooks were unfortunately not completed by Spare. There are a number of full-page and half-page paintings and drawings; other pages have embellishments, with spaces for text which was to have been inserted later.
