John Masefield (1878-1967), a notable poet (he was Poet Laureate of England for almost four decades) also wrote in fine prose, as with his retelling here the story of the most beautiful woman in the world, daughter of Zeus and Leda (with such provenance, why wouldn't she be?). This is a Fine copy of the First Edition, SIGNED by the author and LIMITED to 780 copies, with 30 copies reserved for presentation. The story was later anthologized in a different edition. Londopn: Thomas Tegg, 1811. The "Tale of a Tub," a satire on religion, was the first major prose work of the Good Dean of St. Patrick's. This is a Near Fine copy of the first illustrated edition, with seven engraved plates by John Thurston (1774-1822), here presented in a fine leather binding by Morrell. A lovely little book, a pleasure to hold. Smooth calf with gilt blindstamping on the covers; red labels on the spine, all decorations gilt. Very minor rubbing to the corners. There is a split to the front corner of the spine. While there are new endpapers, it is not secure, and needs more reinforcement. Clean text; 322 pages, with one page of "Treatises wrote by the same Author' to be "speedily published." The text is bright and fresh, with no foxing. All page edges are gilt. Dublin: The Talbot Press, Ltd., 1924. "An Pilibin" is the Irish pseudonym for John Hackett Pollock (1887-1964), one of the founders of Dublin's Gate Theatre. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition, which has been LIMITED to 500 copies, with the type distributed. An uncommon book; copies held at Cambridge, TCD, and the British Library. Olive paper wraps with white titling on the front cover. Clean text; 56 pages. There is no publication date, but bibliographers agree on 1924. The yapped edges inevitably lead to creasing and splits along the margins, but these are very minor. There is a bit of light sun to the spine; else a Fine copy.. Limited. Soft Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Unknown: Unknown, 1849. This small volume is missing its Title Page, so publisher information is unknown. The text is that of Martineau's and there is a faint pencil inscription on the front paste-down dated 1849. Brown cloth binding, blindstamped with ruling and decorations; titling in gilt on the spine. Rubbed at the margins, with a chip at the head of the spine. Textblock is foxed but very readable; 178 pages. Please note the condition issues. Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of restoration or repair. New York: Harper & Bros, 1835. Anglo-Irish writer Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) was quite advanced in her views and was quite popular. This is a Very Good Plus copy of Volumes One and Two of "Harper's Stereotype Edition," bound together. Harpers advertised this series as "Eighteen Volumes Bound in Nine." Volume One (218 pages) contains "Castle Rackrent," "An Essay on Irish Bulls," "An Essay on the Noble Science of Self-Justification," and "Moral Tales." Volume Two (216 pages) has "Forester," "The Prussian Vase," and "The Good Aunt." Serving as the frontis is the Title Page from the 10-volume edition of 1832. " (This copy, although "Volume II" contains Volumes III & IV.) New York: Harper & Bros, 1858. Harper was the main American publisher of Edgeworth's works during the first three quarters of the 19th Century. They were often published in sets, which can be rather difficult to describe, due to multiple issues. Although this is identified as volumes eleven and twelve of "Twenty Volumes Bound in Ten," the spine actually defines this as "Volume Six." Ah well! This is a Very Good copy of Volume 6 of a multi-volume set, containing one of Miss Edgeworth's most famous tales. "Belinda.". Nicely blindstamped cloth decorative binding; designs and title on spine are filled with gilt. Clean text; 237 pages; text is quite bright and still supple - very readable today. The corners are bumped into a bit of a curve and the head and foot of the spine have some rubbing, but a good solid copy.. Later Printing. Decorative Cloth. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1839. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus, Harpers "Stereotype Edition" of "Eighteen Volumes Bound in Nine." This is #9 in the series, but containing volumes 9 & 10. Are we confused yet? Wait, there is more! The gilt on the spine reveals that this is now called "Volume 5" and is dated 1842. Quercus presumes Harper to have brought out another printing and issued it without any changes to its Title Page, perhaps using leftover sheets from the First Printing (an earlier version would probably have been published by "J. & J. Harper" rather than "Harper Brothers"). Quercus notes that this is what makes the book world interesting! Brown pebbled cloth binding in rather nice condition, with very bright gilt lettering. New York: Harper & Bros, 1856. This is a nice, and complete, mid-Victorian set of Edgeworth's works, issued seven years after her death. All ten volumes are in Very Good condition. The cloth binding is nicely blindstamped and decorative, filled with gilt on the spine. The original color may have been a green or the typical publisher's purple of the time; now all volumes are an even dark hue closer to umber. The text is clean and unmarked, bright and generally free of foxing; pages are a bit stiff to turn. Several volumes have a small, contemporary, Canadian bookseller's label on the paste-down. In general, the volumes are mildly bumped, some to a bit of fray at the tips. A solid representative set. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Thus.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
