London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd, 1929. First Edition. Phyllis A. Trery.. First edition, limited to two hunderd copies only. The author has taken the dramatic works of Bernard Shaw and retold them in a jungle context, replacing Shaw's human characters with animals: an endearing and somewhat eccentric book, brilliantly illustrated in art deco style and hand-coloured in pochoir by Phyllis A. Trery. 'In the jangle and jungle of life you must kill or be killed, you must eat or be eaten, you must trap or be trapped. The great Rhino knew it-had always known it, had prepared for it, had grown a lovely thick skin for it, and long, thick tusks for it. And he hewed his was through the jungle and nothing could stop him and he stopped at nothing—and—ugh ! - he was always there, grabbing and getting, spreading and swelling, overtaking, overpowering, overwhelming; nothing could stop him. But even a Rhino has his soft side, and his soft side made him up one day to look for a mate. Being the Rhino that he… Read More

Description:
London: Biba, 8211. First Edition. Barbara Hulanicki, founder of the Biba fashion house, was the woman who popularised the miniskirt, brought celebrity fashion to the high street, and rewarded working women by selling gorgeously decadent clothes and accessories at prices they could afford. Her gorgeous mail-order catalogues feature an extremely early shoot by the young Helmut Newton, classically atmospheric work by Sarah Moon, stunningly debauched images by James Wedge, and playfully by Harri Peccinotti; designed by John McConnell with drawings by Moira MacGregor. The Biba newspaper, "Welcome to the new Biba", was published to celebrate the opening of Biba's new department store in Kensington, London in the September of 1973. Infused with style, informed by Art Nouveau, and inspired by Sarah Bernhardt, the grand Biba department store offered "the kind of very feminine clothes she [Bernhardt] might enjoy if she had lived in London now, instead of Paris then." A stylish and beautiful archive of iconic… Read More

Description:
London: Charles Knight, 1839. First Edition. Near fine. John Jackson. With upwards of three hundred illustrations, engraved on wood, by John Jackson. An important and influential work on wood engraving conceived, written, and illustrated by a master artist of the medium, John Jackson (1801 - 1848). Early chapters catalogue the history of the medium at length, from antiquity to the creation of block books in the fifteenth century. Chatto and Jackson examine the emergence of typography and conduct a detailed analysis of the period in which Albert Durer flourished, from about 1498 to 1528. There is a chapter on the principal wood cuts by Holbein, exploring improvements to the art throughout the sixteenth century. After further investigation into the history of the process leading from the eighteenth century until the date of publication, a highly technical series of instructions delineate the basic process of wood engraving, the best mode for printing wood cuts, superior tools and materials, good… Read More

Description:
Germany, 1851. First Edition. Two fine German broadsheets, advertising a travelling zoo. Among the many fascinating animals listed for exhibition, the Australian dingo makes a surprising inclusion. The 1840s and 1850s saw a distinct rise in the popularity of travelling menageries throughout the world; one thinks of the Beaumont-Waller exhibits held in Hyde Park in Sydney in 1847. A staple of such exhibits was a wide variety of animals from the far-flung reaches of the globe, with the exotic and the ferocious equally prized. Although we have not found much recorded about Paul Bernabo (‘from Italy' notes one of the broadsheets here), he had clearly learnt the lessons of showmanship, as can be seen from his use of a dramatic woodcut of a snake strangling a tiger. Indeed, it is apparent that Bernabo's travelling zoo brought an impressive range of wild animals to the German public, with tigers, lions and other wild cats from Africa, an anaconda from Brazil, a sable from Japan, as well as two crocodiles… Read More

Description:
Lille & Grammont: Maison du Bon Livre & Oeuvre de St. Charles, 1900. A particularly good copy of this important account of China and Tibet by the French missionary Évariste Régis Huc, who entered Lhasa in early 1846. Accompanied by another Vincentian missionary named Joseph Gabet and a Chinese convert, the party travelled through the vast interior deserts of China before reaching Tibet. Travelling overland with a Tibetan embassy returning from Peking, Huc and Gabet acquired language skills and a grasp of Buddhism that allowed them to readily converse with the Lamas who offered them hospitality. Accordingly, their experience of Tibet was positive overall (in contrast to that of other European travellers of the later nineteenth-century). Ultimately political pressures resulting from the Opium Wars precipitated an early departure and closure of the nascent mission in Lhasa. Folio, bound in the original deep blue decorated wrappers, illustrated throughout including photographic plates and full-page… Read More
