This attractive edition of Stevenson's fables is a pleasure to behold: the type is beautifully set amidst Russell's striking woodcut vignettes and this edition is printed in a large paper format with generous margins. Limited edition of 250 copies, printed in Baskerville type on hand-made paper. Large slim octavo, quarter cloth and patterned papered boards. Aside from some gentle external browning, this is a fine copy.

Publications Willy Fischer, 1932. First Edition. Ludo, a comedy in three acts by the renowned French journalist, novelist and playwright, Pierre Scize (pseudonym for Michel Joseph Piot, 1894 -1956). Scize was hit by a shell in the first months of WWI, losing his arm. With all that remained of him, Scize started to write. He wrote for L'Œuvre, Bonsoir, Paris-Journal, Canard Enchaine, La Figaro and was a member of one of the first ciné-clubs, Ricciotto Canudo's CASA, becoming a film critic for Candide and Paris Soir. Small octavo, illustrated paper wrappers, 24 pages, photographically illustrated with art deco advertisements and portraits of the company in black & white throughout, near fine. Rare.

Barbara Hulanicki, founder of the Biba fashion house, was the woman who popularised the miniskirt, brought celebrity fashion to the high street, and rewarded working women by selling gorgeously decadent clothes and accessories at prices they could afford. Her gorgeous mail-order catalogues feature an extremely early shoot by the young Helmut Newton, classically atmospheric work by Sarah Moon, stunningly debauched images by James Wedge, and playfully by Harri Peccinotti; designed by John McConnell with drawings by Moira MacGregor. The Biba newspaper, "Welcome to the new Biba", was published to celebrate the opening of Biba's new department store in Kensington, London in the September of 1973. An important and influential work on wood engraving conceived, written, and illustrated by a master artist of the medium, John Jackson (1801 - 1848). Early chapters catalogue the history of the medium at length, from antiquity to the creation of block books in the fifteenth century. Chatto and Jackson examine the emergence of typography and conduct a detailed analysis of the period in which Albert Durer flourished, from about 1498 to 1528. Germany, 1851. First Edition. Two fine German broadsheets, advertising a travelling zoo. Among the many fascinating animals listed for exhibition, the Australian dingo makes a surprising inclusion. The 1840s and 1850s saw a distinct rise in the popularity of travelling menageries throughout the world; one thinks of the Beaumont-Waller exhibits held in Hyde Park in Sydney in 1847. A staple of such exhibits was a wide variety of animals from the far-flung reaches of the globe, with the exotic and the ferocious equally prized. Although we have not found much recorded about Paul Bernabo (‘from Italy' notes one of the broadsheets here), he had clearly learnt the lessons of showmanship, as can be seen from his use of a dramatic woodcut of a snake strangling a tiger. Lille & Grammont: Maison du Bon Livre & Oeuvre de St. Charles, 1900. A particularly good copy of this important account of China and Tibet by the French missionary Évariste Régis Huc, who entered Lhasa in early 1846. Accompanied by another Vincentian missionary named Joseph Gabet and a Chinese convert, the party travelled through the vast interior deserts of China before reaching Tibet. Travelling overland with a Tibetan embassy returning from Peking, Huc and Gabet acquired language skills and a grasp of Buddhism that allowed them to readily converse with the Lamas who offered them hospitality. Accordingly, their experience of Tibet was positive overall (in contrast to that of other European travellers of the later nineteenth-century). Ultimately political pressures resulting from the Opium Wars precipitated an early departure and closure of the nascent mission in Lhasa.
