Brown, Carlyle (American, 1919-1963). TABLE STILL LIFE WITH GLASSES. Ink and wash on paper, 1952. Signed and dated '52, lower right. 9 1/2 x 13 inches, framed to 14 x 17 1/2 inches. Provenance: Catherine Viviani Gallery, New York, with its label, on the verso of the frame. In excellent condition.Originally from Califonia, Brown went to New York in 1946, after completing his art studies and his service in the US Navy. He became part of the circle of artists, musicians and writers around Pavel Tchelitchev, and had a one-man show at Durlacher Galleries in 1947. His work was collected by Cecil Beaton, Charles James, Van Day Truex, and Clifford Coffin. He married Margery Hulett. The couple were invited to live in England by Edward James, the leading collector of work by Dali. They traveled in Europe and settled in Rome in 1949. In Italy Brown began to focus on Still-life subjects. Brown died of an overdose of pills and alcohol in 1961.

(9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in., From the regular, numbered edition of 318 copies (there were an additional 15 special copies). 212pp., with 29 etchings, 9 on full sheets, 20 in text. Attractively rebound in 1/2 leather over pictorial boards, with the original wraps bound-in. Light foxing, mostly in margins, not affecting images.

Printed by the artist on Rives paper. Provenance, estate of the artist; Swann Galleries. 9 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches (plate), 11 1/2 x 16 inches (sheet). This print received an Honorable Mention at the Philadelphia Art Alliance Exhibition in 1938. A small loss at the upper left margin, well away from the plate mark, and with adhesive residue at the upper right corner and on the right edge, center. One of the most compelling of Barnet's early prints on social themes. Rare.

A "window" (c. 4 x 4 inches) in the face of the portfolio, reveals a vignette protected by a glassine sheet (original). Part I, Drawings; 28 plates of ink drawings, in facsimile; Part II "Images a Faire Mourir les Sirenes de Nostalgie" a text in French by Takal, with 18 accompanying illustrations and a separate brochure with Roditi's translation of the text. One of 333 numbered copies signed by Takal in ink on the Justification sheet (the total edition of 395 copies included 3 colored by hand, and with an original drawing, 33 also hand colored and with an orginal etching, and 25 cpoies hors de commerce). In very good condition except for a few printer's creases, mostly unobtrusive from the recto. Scarce.

This copy varies from the one usually seen in the following respects: 1. There is no pictorial paste-on on this copy, and there clearly seems not to have been one, or the intention to have one, as this copy does not have the embossed gold square which frames the paste-on the other issue (and on the companion volume "Old French Fairy Tales"). 2. The cloth is different. The usually seen issue has cloth with narrow parallel vertical lines; this cloth has both horizontal and vertical lines. 3. Both have a copyright date of 1921, with no publication date stated. 4.
