Best known for My People (1915), a short story collection often compared to Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and James Joyce's Dubliners, the Welsh writer Caradoc Evans (1878-1945) wished to shock the Welsh out of their complacency and smugness by contrasting the pieties of non-conformist Christianity with the brutal realities of poverty, meanness, and hypocrisy he had personally experienced. He is said to confirmed his self-appointed role as scourge of the Welsh with this savage play. Octavo. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt titles. Widely known for his liberal activism, he was also the first Episcopal bishop to ordain an openly homosexual woman as a priest in the church. William Bliss Carman (1861-1929) was a Canadian regional poet of the Maritime Provinces and the New England region of the United States who is remembered chiefly for poignant love poems and one or two rhapsodies in celebration of nature.
