Early days in Taney and Stone Counties, MO, are recalled in this 11" x 8.5" spiral-bound booklet, comprised of excerpts from Goodspeed Brothers: A Reminiscent History of The Ozark Region (1886), Missouri, A Guide to the "Show Me" State, a 1941 WPA publication, The State of Missouri, an Autobiography (a publication written for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition), and other sources. The 61-page booklet is printed on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. The first part of the booklet contains a history of the Ozark area, especially as it relates to Missouri, two brief histories of the counties, and bios of leading citizens. The WPA section has a section on Ozark folklore, and brief stops at Forsyth, Chula Vista, Branson, Marvel Cave, the School of the Ozarks, and Hollister. An overview of the early days of Taylor County, Kentucky, and biographies of a dozen of the county's prominent residents from the late 1800s, are combined with a brief history of the state in this new 22-page book. The spiral-bound book includes biographies from the 1880's book, Kentucky: A History of the State by J.H. Battle, W.H. Perrin and G.C. Kniffin; excerpts from Kentucky, a Guide to the Bluegrass State, a 1939 product of the WPA Writer's Program; and information from various internet sources. The tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed on 60# opaque 8.5" x 11" paper. Tucson, Arizona: A Plus Printing Co., 1998. Charles Gardner was a member of Company A, First Regiment, Maine Cavalry from December 6th 1861 to December 6th 1864. Between 1909 and 1912 he wrote down his remembrances of that time with the notation that "if it will interest any one I shall be well paid for my trouble." His story was passed down through his family and eventually printed in an 8 1/2 by 5 1/2" 70 page booklet. From training camp, by train to Washington, sent to the guard house, to Harper's Ferry, into battle where he was injured and captured, taken to a prison camp, and paroled -- and this is just the first half of the booklet!
