Letter on Lee Simonson stationery to Carl Brandt, who published artists' pictures and articles about Simson in Harpers, Atlantic Monthly, and Vogue. "I do land an article in Vogue - a fashionable, popular women's magazine which prints only stuff that in interest at least is amusing - instead of waiting for the article to appear and seeing whether you couldn't wave it in a few editorial faces with the remark" what did I tell you?" or words to that effect, you amiably wash your hands of me....." Description:
The group of ten personal checks, dated from January to November 1978, offers a window into Williams' activity during that time. Several checks were paid to a French restaurant, one to a hospital and several to other bank accounts. Williams is considered on of America's most important dramatists. He won the Pulitzer Prize for "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1948 and for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 1955. In addition, "The Glass Menagerie" (1945) and "The Night of the Iguana" (1961) received New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards. His 1952 play, "The Rose Tattoo," received the Tony Award for best play. He moved to New Orleans in 1939 and changed his name to "Tennessee" for the state of his father's birth. Williams signs each check in full, "Tennessee Williams" under his printed name. We typically sell Williams' checks for $120-$150. We offer this group for $800/NET. Autograph

Description:
In both war-time letters to his cousin, Charles Getz, Weber writes mostly of support for Russia against the Nazis but he also discusses his art. In the letter dated 1942, Weber offers Charles congratulations on his marriage. Weber comments on his cousin no longer being lonely. "One can read the greatest books... but reading is not living. Life without human (and (social) [sic] contact is pretty barren." Weber continues by commenting on an "excellent appreciation of my work in the ‘Morning Freiheit' by Dr. Kloomok... his is one of the best Jewish writers...." Dr. Isaac Kloomok was a scholar who wrote about Jewish artists, including Weber and Marc Chagall. Weber writes of current events. "At the moment the news from Russia is not so very good, and you know how grieved I am, but in the end the Nazi bastards will be conquered and sent to hell for all time!...." He continues in English until the last paragraph which he writes in Yiddish. "I would like to apologize for not writing in Yiddish, it takes too… Read More

Description:
To Prudence Whitfield, wife of Raoul Whitfield, a fellow "Black Mask" writer and one of Hammett's closest friends. Hammett and Prudence (Pru) shared a wealth of correspondence and many are written, signed or addressed in a manner that feed the speculation that they were lovers, even while he was in a relationship with Lillian Hellman. Our letter is addressed to "Pru darling" and signed, "Much love, sweetheart..." with initials "SDH." Hammett talks about the letters he had received from her, of which there were many. She apparently wrote daily at that time. He also talks about it being winter in Alaska, saying, "We're a pretty white world." He comments on life in the Army and about writing. "Of my own affairs in the Army there isn't a single God-damned bit of news," but notes that "sitting here at ease in my newspaper hut, putting on a little weight and practically bloated with health, I've no trouble being phlegmatic about it all. This is by no means the worst way of fighting a war that any enlisted… Read More

Description:
Franklin D. Roosevelt decides a legal question allowing fish to be distributed in refrigerated meat trucks. "there appears to be nothing which would hinder the fishing industry from utilizing the refrigerator cars belonging to others" Roosevelt writes to U. S. Marshall John J. Murphy (Boston, MA) agreeing to allow the fish companies to transport fish in refrigerated cars belonging to meat packing companies. Murphy sent a 5 1/2 page typed memorandum, included, explaining in great detail the transportation problem faced by the fish industry. Roosevelt agrees to intervene to facilitate this practical solution. Roosevelt begins with a review of the problem Murphy described. "You state that that industry [fish industry] has a limited market because refrigerator cars used for transporting meat to the East are returned empty. You attribute the existence of this situation to the so-called 'Consent Decree' and propose that steps be taken to remove the restrictions in order that the facilities which are now… Read More

Description:
Letters of Stanford White are rarely available and ours to noted American artist Thomas Wilmer Dewing is particularly noteworthy. White writes to Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851-1938), American painter and White's friend, commenting on Dewing's exhibit in March 1900 at the Montross Gallery in New York. White writes that the exhibit, "is perfectly bully. My only regret was that you did not have the big Cheney picture and the panel of your little girl and the two pussy cats which Freer has...." Overall, White thinks Dewing's show is "beautiful." In the next sentence White includes a name in holograph difficult to decipher but possibly Montross, the gallery owner. "I think [holograph name] ought to have a more noticeable sign than he had. I did not know he was on the top floor and went rushing all around trying to find him...." In the final sentence, White refers to "the Detroit matter." As I understand, everything is getting along swimmingly in the Detroit matter." He signs, "Stanford." White refers to the… Read More

Description:
Tracy writes a letter of recommendation for his friend and film director, George Cukor. The actor recommends the director to make war propaganda films. In 1942, Cukor enlisted in the Army Signal Corps. Cukor was 43 at that time which might explain the reason for Tracy writing to Colonel Melvin Gillette, of the Signal Corps Photographic Center. Cukor directed training and propaganda films for a year after which he was honorably discharged because of his age. Tracy and Cukor had worked together on a number of films before and after World War II. Tracy lists some of Cukor's films as a way of showing Cukor's accomplishments. He describes Cukor as, "a man of great intellectual and artistic experience, has a great sense of humor and an enormously quick mind, which seems to me to add materially to his potentialities as an officer. He is a very well educated man...has boundless energy...." Tracy notes in his final paragraph that Cukor understands "human nature." He signs above his typed name, "Spencer Tracy."… Read More
