[Santiago de Chile], Imprenta de la Opinion, dated 5 June 1837.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Folio (28 x 18 cm.), unbound. Woodcut ornament below caption title. Small nick at one edge. In very good to fine condition. Broadside. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. This report of June 4 by General Blanco Encalada states that a column of 400 infantry and 30 cavalrymen had approached Valparaiso. Blanco Encalada took charge of the Valdivia battalion and the local militia and drove the mutineers into retreat. Losses among the mutineers amounted to some 100 men. The soldiers in Quillota had rebelled under the leadership of Colonel José Vidaurre. The mutineers had imprisoned Diego Portales, who was there arranging for an expedition against the Peru-Bolivian Confederation. When word of the defeat at Valparaiso reached the mutineers, they shot Portales. He instantly became a martyr, and public opinion - which had been against the war with the Peru-Bolivian Confederation - abruptly veered in favor of the war. ***… Read More

[Colophon] Lisbon, Na Imprensa Nacional, 1834.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, contemporary blue wrappers, text block edges tinted yellow. Caption title. Clean and crisp. In fine to very fine condition. 44 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this description of the outbreak of cholera in Portugal in 1833, including its spread, government actions taken to curb it, and newspaper reports. Perhaps most interesting is the detailed report of an autopsy performed in Portugal on a cholera victim (pp. 12-17). The first appendix is a report of a microscopic examination of water tainted with cholera. The second is an annotated bibliography of Portuguese works on the 1833 epidemic. Lima Leitão (1787-1856), a major figure in Portuguese medicine, was born in Lagos (Algarve) and served as a physician with the French and the Portuguese armies from 1808 to 1814, before moving to Brazil. In 1816 he was sent from Rio de Janeiro to Mozambique, where he was chief physician, and from there in 1819 to India, to act as… Read More

Caricature portrait of Manuel Lima by Carlos Martins Pereira on verso of half–title. First published 1944. Several passages are marked for deletion in red; presumably a last–minute editorial change (at the author's direction?), and presumably all (or most?) copies appear thus—at least the few copies we have seen are identical in this respect. *** See Laurinda Bom in Machado, ed., Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, p. 268. In it he states that Manuel de Lima (1918–1976) "transporta-nos admiravelmente para o mundo da ficção e de uma maneira girandolesca que é rara entre os nossos autores … servindo-se do realismo para desfazer o próprio realismo". Both the preface and the work are crucial for the study of the late arrival of surrealism in Portugal.… Read More
