Description:
Paris: Dusacq & Cie. Editeurs, 1864. Hand-coloured lithograph after a painting by Droz. Very good condition apart from some light soiling, two skillfully repaired small tears in the top and right margins, and an expertly mended loss in the lower part of the image. A beautifully coloured, humorous plate that was most likely part of a series published by Dusacq of images by various artists depicting railway related scenes. During the mid-nineteenth century, the technological advancement and financial prosperity of France under Napoleon III hastened the development of the railway and other modern modes of transportation such as the omnibus. These improvements brought about a culture of mass tourism, as members of various classes flocked to the railroad to take day trips. An archetypal symbol of modern life, the railway station became a popular subject during the period and was represented by artists such as Honoré Daumier and William Powell Frith. It was an ideal place to observe a varied… Read More

Description:
London: Ackermann & Co, 1851. Hand-coloured lithograph by Dutton, printed by Day & Son. Small expert repairs. Sheet size: 21 1/4 x 27 2/8 inches. Beautiful portrait of United States Frigate "St. Lawrence" saluting off Osbourne, Isle of Wight, summer residence of Queen Victoria. The St. Lawrence was laid out in the 1820s by the Norfolk Navy Yard, but she remained uncompleted on the ways until work on her, interrupted by a shortage of funds, was resumed during the Mexican War and she was finally launched in late 1847 or early in 1848. She bore 8 VIII-inch guns and 42 32 pounders. A beautiful sailing ship, she represents an ideal of the pre-steamship days, superbly rendered by Dutton, who was probably the best printmaker of marine subjects during this period. Thomas Goldsworth Dutton (d. 1891) worked for Day & Haghe and Day & Son, producing refined lithographs of the great British ships of the period, as well as visiting battleships of other nations, as here. With Commander Joshua Sands in command, the… Read More

Description:
1780. Pastel on laid, watermarked paper. The sheet retains signs of having been stretched, as these types of portraits typically were. Dampstain upper right corner, tear lower right corner, otherwise excellent condition. A strikingly well done portrait of a successful European gentleman with piercing eyes. Pastel portraits were popular in Europe, Great Britain and America during most of the 18th century, especially in the 1770s and 80s. They provided a more rapid way of rendering a likeness in bright colors that didn't yellow. This was a golden age for portrait painting, which exemplified the optimistic views of the Enlightenment: a sitter was not ashamed to show his or her wealth, contentment or character. Our self -assured subject looks directly at the viewer with piercing eyes, calm, practical, not likely to be fooled. It is an astounding accomplishment; we feel that this was exactly how he was. The artist allowed himself or herself (there were a number of excellent female pastel portraitists,… Read More

Description:
London: J. F. W. Des Barres, 1776. Engraved with color wash and outline color. Sheet: 31 x 42 1/4 inches. Expert restoration, primarily at the upper margin. Two sheets joined, both watermarked "J.Bates" and countermarked "JB". Fourth state of five. Among the earliest charts published by Des Barres were those relevant to the crisis in New England, as the War of Independence broke out. This chart depicts the coast of Massachusetts from Salem to Scituate Harbor, and includes the complicated hydrography of Boston Harbor, and the confluent rivers. A considerable amount of coastal topography is included, obviously relevant to warships. Fundamentally, a chart for navigators, it includes soundings and shoals, with particularly strong detail along the Charles and Mystic Rivers as well as in Salem and Marblehead. Samuel Holland was the lead surveyor. In 1764, he was named Surveyor General of both the Province of Quebec and the Northern District of North America. He had a considerable staff and the British… Read More

Description:
London: Published by T. McLean, 1857. Hand-coloured lithograph. Image size: 12 1/8 x 18 1/4 inches. A beautiful view of Bowood gardens, from "The Gardens of England." Published in 1857, The Gardens of England is a series of 24 plates with accompanying text depicting the diverse luxuriant gardens of various distinguished English mansions. The mid-nineteenth century was a period during which the traditional aesthetics of garden design underwent a significant change in England, as innovative ideas and concepts were being continually introduced and explored. Brooke's publication embodies the eclectic nature of Victorian garden design and constitutes an important visual survey of the varied styles that were popular among the wealthy and fashionable. The grounds that include Bowood Gardens in Wiltshire were designed by "Capability" Brown, however the great Italianate terrace gardens on the south front of the house were commissioned by the 3rd Marquess. The Upper Terrace, by Sir Robert Smirke, was… Read More

Description:
London: Published by White and Co, 1810. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and a few minor water stains in the left margin and top right corner of the sheet, the latter of which slightly extends into the top right corner of the image. A picturesque view of the Pyran falls near Hafod House from "Tour to Hafod," a fine collection of plates depicting the mansion and its surrounding landscape engraved by Stadler after drawings by Smith. In his text, J. E. Smith describes Pyran as "one of the most favourite water-falls" and explains how it "terminates an umbrageous glen in the most advantageous manner, opening upon the spectator by degrees, till the whole is seen in perfection" (p. 13). Comprised of 15 views, Tour to Hafod also included comprehensive descriptive text by the scientist and collector James Edward Smith. The work was most likely intended as a tribute to the social benefactor and literary man Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), who devoted much… Read More

Sheet size: 26 3/4 x 39 7/8 inches (approx). [Pl. 245]. In October 1971, employing the most faithful printing method available, the best materials and the ablest craftsmen of their age, the Amsterdam firm of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd., in conjunction with the Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York, set out to produce the finest possible limited edition facsimile of the greatest bird book ever printed: the Havell edition of John James Audubon's well-loved "Birds of America". The Curators of the Teyler's Museum in Haarlem, Holland made their copy of the original work available for use as a model. The Museum, founded in 1778, bought their copy through Audubon's son as part of the original subscription in 1839. After long deliberation, the extremely complex but highly accurate process of colour photo-lithography… Read More

Description:
[No place but Burlington, Iowa, 1838. Pen, ink and watercolour map of Cumberland County, with the properties of D. Parvin and D. Harris, and numerous towns located, the demarcation line between marsh and solid ground marked, and the routes and names of all the main rivers and creeks shown, some roads marked in pencil, and the route between Salem, Salem Co., and the tip of Cape May marked with a purple dotted line. An attractive map of Cumberland County, in southern New Jersey. The Parvin property is identified as being on the southern bank of the Cohansey River in Fairfield Township. The Harris property is in adjoining Downe Township. These are the only two individual properties identified on the map, suggesting that the map was either compiled for or by a member of the Parvin or Harris family. This map was loosely inserted in an 1838 edition of Bradford's Illustrated Atlas, inscribed on the title "Theodore Sutton Parvin, Burlington, Iowa, August 15/ [18]38", and an examination of the map of New… Read More
