An introduction to European cookery methods modified for local conditions in the United States. In thirty-one sections plus an appendix on the salting and smoking of meat in general. In browned and rubbed printed paper-covered boards with dark brown cloth spine. Child's pencil scribbles to end papers. Early owner's ink ownership inscription to front board. A bit shaken, otherwise good. [OCLC locates no copies of this edition; Bitting, pages 479-80 (different printing); not in Cagle; Lowenstein 700 (different printing)].

Hartford, Conn: the hotel, 1870. Broadsheet menu (22.4 x 14.4 cm.), [2] pages, printed recto and verso. Decorated with an ornamental border and American flag on the recto; simple border on verso. A bill of fare for the hotel restaurant for a single day, with coach schedule. Nine courses are listed on the Bill of Fare, including Soup, Fish, Boiled, Entrees, Roast, Relishes, Vegetables, Pastry, and Dessert. The United States Hotel, in Court House Square, Hartford, was a large four-story building with louvered shutters, tall chimneys, a balustrade, and two American flags flying from flagpoles on the roof. David A. Rood is listed as the proprietor of the Hotel variously in 1865, 67, or 71 through 1889 or 1899; As Prior & Rood, he was part owner of Hartford's Trumbull Hotel from as early as 1865. Chip from top edge, not effecting text or borders; light horizontal crease from folding. Overall very good. [OCLC locates no copies; not in NYPL Menu Collection].

Includes many recipes for tinctures, herbal essences, pickles, ketchups, other preserves, hair tonics, roof patches and more, my favorite being "To Make Artificial Volcanoes." Some light foxing throughout, otherwise very good, in publisher's gilt-stamped light brown cloth, with some rubbing and corner bumps, but still near very good. [Not in Bitting, Brown, or Cagle].

Intended as a general household manual but containing one of the earliest cumulations of Creole recipes in their myriad variety - succeeding by perhaps only a few months the first two Creole summations, The Creole Cookery Book issued by the Christian Woman's Exchange (New Orleans: The Exchange; Printed by T. H. Thomason, 1885) and La Cuisine Creole (New York: Will H. Coleman, 1885), published as an anonymous work, but belatedly (and misguidedly) attributed to Lafcadio Hearn. Famously known as the Schloß (palace), the complex on view was built in the Wiesbaden suburb of Biebrich between 1907 and 1909 by the architect Paul Bonatz (1877-1956) to the specifications of Otto Henkell (1869-1929). Henkel & Co. more than weathered World War II. It does not appear that the family sought ties with the National Socialists, but they didn't have to. An early 19-century work on planting, mostly arboriculture for trees, with chapters on judicious planting, the structure and growth of trees, approved methods for preparing soil, and with a chapter on ornamental plantings as well. Other topics touched on include hedgerow planting and maintenance, and a list with descriptions of forest trees. Both George Sinclair and Jane Loudon are credited in a few institutional records as author of this work, but we find a source for neither. Published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, a London-based society formed in the early nineteenth century with the intention to publish educational treatises on a wide range of topics so that individuals who could not obtain formal education could educate themselves.
