Description:
[48] pp.Beautifully coloured copy (with both a wide variety of bright colours and subtle shading) of the rare first (and only early) edition of a series of large aquatint plates showing the uniforms of Napoleon's honour guards (cavalry, infantry and marine) in 11 Dutch cities, with the letterpress leaves providing both an explanation of the figures in the plates (in French and Dutch) and a list of the names of all the guards for each city. Since each city appears to have developed its own uniforms, the colours and style vary greatly. "Not only visually attractive but also extremely rare" (Legermuseum); "l'original est de la plus grande rareté" (Colas). When the French Revolutionary army toppled the Dutch Republican government in 1795 they found much support in the population and established the nominally independent Batavian Republic under French-sympathisers. After Napoleon declared himself Emperor in 1804 he established his brother Louis Napoleon as King of the Netherlands in 1806, but finding him…

Description:
[48], 479, [9] pp.Extremely rare unauthorized fourth edition of a manual on field fortification by the German officer Johann Gotlieb Tielke (1731-1787), first published in 1769. In his introduction, Tielke advises "young officers, who are desirous of studying" (English ed.) to read the present work till they thoroughly understand it, and to complement it with other military works "to acquire competent knowledge of the attack and defence of places" (English ed.). It is divided into three parts, the first dealing with marches and camps, answering questions such as: what are a field engineer's duties?, how to build roads and bridges, how to choose a proper place for encampment, etc. The second part treats field fortification, necessary materials and tools, etc., also with comments on commanding and distributing the workers. Lastly it deals with attacking and defending fortifications. As noted on the title-page, the text (and the engravings) give examples from "the latest war", meaning the Seven Years'…

Description:
[8]; [1]; [1] ll. plus the part-title, double portrait and XIV, XII, XII prints.First complete edition of a series of engraved views of Venice by Visentini after Canaletto's paintings, which were in the collection of the book collector, patron of the arts and British Consul of Venice Joseph Smith (ca. 1673/4-1770). Canaletto, also known as Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768) was an Italian painter renowned for his paintings depicting Venice and its canals. Visentini's plates are not only the best known among the many engravings made after Canaletto's famous views of Venice, but also the best and most influential: "crucial to forming the image of Venice in the mind of its visitors" (Millard). The British Consul Smith commissioned the painter, engraver and architect Antonio Visentini (1688-1782), connected to the Academia and to the artistic and publishing circle around Smith, to engrave the plates after Canalettos paintings. The series of 38 plates is divided into three suites of respectively XIV, XII…

Description:
112 pp. (incl. photocopies)10 instalments of the very rare Dutch satirical periodical Utopiaansch weekblad, written anonymously by Wibmer in the form of dialogues between the author and the Utopia-born servant Hans, who informs him of the latest gossip. Added is instalment 6 of Wibmers similarly absurdist Utopiaansche courant, a periodical that preceded the Weekblad and satirized King Willem I, who had ruled the Low Countries since Napoleons defeat in 1815. Both periodicals contain severe but cleverly hidden criticism of Dutch politics, society and circumstances of the day. Wibmer (1792-1836), trained as a minister of the Walloon Church, acknowledged his authorship, leading the church to relieve him of his post. On 8 September 1819, soon after publication of the present instalment 6 of the Courant, Wibmer was arrested along with the publisher and printer (Molenijzer and Brouwer) on various charges, including sedition. He successfully argued that his text had no comprehensible meaning and was…

[6], "464" [= 462], [16] ll.Rare first edition of the first Dutch translation of Calvin's commentaries on the Epistles of Saint Paul and the Epistle to the Hebrews. By 1539 Calvin had planned to write commentaries on all the Pauline Epistles, and he began with the book of Romans (first published in 1540). In 1551 all parts were finished and published together with the Epistle to the Hebrews as In omnes D. Pauli epistolas, atque etia in epistola ad Hebraeos commentaria luculentissima. It was translated into Dutch by Johannes Dyrkinus (ca. 1530-before 1592) and Johannes Florianus (1522-1585) and contains a new preface by Calvin addressed to Simon Grynaeus as well as a dedication to Unico Manninga. "
although Calvin was read and certainly influential in the Netherlands from an early date, surprisingly few of his works were translated into Dutch before 1572" (Pettegree, p. 230). It was printed and published in Emden by Gillis van der Erve and Willem Gailliart. "Emden printing represented possibly the…
