Description:
Glenview, IL: Naval Air Training Command, 1945. First Edition. Wraps. Good +. 4to. Illustrated wraps. Contemporary post binding added at left margin. Most paper lost from spine. Wrapper edges worn, chipped. Internally clean, sound. An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview, dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings (likely the work of a single, unnamed illustrator) and photograph reproductions, executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning, lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud, holding a harp, wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot, but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots, and there are old piltos, 'But!'… Read more

Description:
np, [ca. 1957-1958]. Hardcover. Very good. 4to. Black three-ring binder with illustrated title label to front, containing 17 loosely plastic covered paper leaves, profusely filled both recto and verso with black and white photographs and materials on the English Ford line of automobiles. More than 35 various scrap and ephemera elements in all. Front cover moderately worn, discolored. Some wrinkling and warping internally. Overall very good. Fascinating salesman's catalogue produced by British Ford, marketing their cars to American dealerships. Struggling financially, Post-WWII Britain enacted an "Export or Die" mandate for its domestic carmakers in hopes of injecting more stable currencies into its economy. This act mandated aggressive sales in foreign markets, and especially in The United States. Ford of Britain had operated as a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company since 1909, producing an entirely different line from its American division. Since it was indeed a British car… Read more

Description:
Stockholm: [Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien / Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences] , 1901. First edition thus. Wraps. Near fine. 8vo. Grey-green printed wraps. Near fine. 25-58pp. Early publication (in German) on anthropogenic global warming by Swedish scientist and Nobel laureate (1903) Svante Aarhenius, "On the heat absorption by carbon dioxide and its influence on the temperature of the Earth's surface." This work follows an 1896 paper ("Ueber den Einfluss des Atmosphärischen Kohlensäurengehalts auf die Temperatur der Erdoberfläche") in which Arrhenius, building on the work of Samuel Pierpont Langley and several others, first calculated the increase in Earth surface temperature caused by increases in industrial carbon production. Formulated in an attempt to explain the ice ages, Arrhenius' calculations omitted certain factors necessary for accuracy -- and, based on the rate of carbon production in his time, he expected warming to take hundreds of years --… Read more

Description:
Newport News, VA: Patrick Huyghe, 1970-1973. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. 4to. Side-stapled wraps. Printed mimeo throughout. Very good to near fine. Several issues show moderate exterior toning; many have postage to rear. Most farily toned internally, but otherwise clean, sharp, and unmarred. Issues range from 22pp. to 43pp. An extremely charming ufology journal, edited and published by Patrick Huyghe. The inaugural issue announces the death of official ufology: "Here lies official UFOlogy... Born circa 1947, died December 1969." With contributions from a variety of authors, the journal sought to advance the field of ufology by using computer analysis and conducting original research, seeking to overcome the "voodoo" of traditional ufology in favor of a more "scientific" approach. Authors mostly treat their topics from this angle, seeking to advance ufological research methodologies in both theory and practice. Though incomplete, a representative run of this… Read more
