Matted and Framed print of the U.S. Flagship "Chicago", No maker, place, or date [c. 1885]. 10 ¼" x 22 ¼" mat opening; 16 ¾" x 27 ¼" frame size; chromolithograph on board, matted as found, new archival backing, in a period frame as found; near fine. Unknown printer and date, but the U.S.S. Chicago was made by the Delaware River Iron Ship Building and Engine Works of Chester, Pennsylvania, and launched December 5, 1885. It was one of the new steel ships in the White Squadron of War Ships (hulls were painted white) commissioned by Congress to update the Navy. Reframed with an archival backing in the narrow oak frame in which it was found.

Elliott Henderson (1877-1944) was an African American poet from Ohio. He self-published nine volumes of poetry: Plantation Echoes, Darky Meditations, Heroes of the Battlefield and Other Poems, Humble Folks, Old Fashioned Black Fo'ks, Polished and Unpolished Diamonds, The Romance of Hannibal, and Soliloquy of Satan and Other Poems. Most of his poetry is written in a Black vernacular English. A two page dedication, each with two columns of names, lists people whom Henderson credits with encouraging his literary efforts, including many prominent Ohio public officials, politicians, bankers, physicians, professors, and clergy.

England: Unmarked Staffordshire, 1860. [CHILD'S PLATE]. 7 ½" child's unmarked Staffordshire embossed ABC, raised rim plate with a central four- color transfer of a cricket game on the well. The transfer is detailed showing 9 figures on the field, two on the pitch with wickets, and a crowd watching the game played. The flag of Great Britain is flying on a pole over some buildings. Light stains on the rim and rear, some scratching of glaze, a few sand bumps, and minimal crazing on back.
