The bulk of this book gathers writings by Monnier which appeared anonymously in 1867, two years before her death in 1869, published as Hors De L'Abîme Histoire D'une Vie De Femme. Legal instrument of protest signed by Alexander H. Arthur, Notary Public for the Office of the Planters' Bank of the State of Mississippi at Vicksburg. Arthur declares that he presented a bank note for $267.73 to the Planters' Bank and that the teller there "...refused to pay the same, saying that the drawers not accepted [sic] had made no deposit of funds for that purpose." Arthur's formal protest was made on behalf of "Robert Riddle, Esq., Cashier and holder of the original Note." A copy of this note, signed by H.G. Bankston and Wm. Burton, is copied out at the bottom of the document. The note had been originally issued to the firm Jennings & Drone. Docketing on the verso mentions "Damages $214.23." Light foxing; very good. bjcb 352254 An overview of the history and working mechanisms of the United States Military Academy, i.e., West Point, published in the midst of the Civil War. Mansfield's text originally appeared in the American Journal of Education and the present item is a separately-issued and stand-alone reprint. The author, Edward Deering Mansfield, was graduated from West Point in 1818 and went on to write a number of biographies on military figures such as Winfield Scott and Ulysses S. Grant.

Lightly-soiled wraps, pale stain and corner crease to rear wrap; a few ruffled fore-edges to some pages. An otherwise handsome copy; Very Good. A humorously and amply-illustrated production; a top-of-the line yearbook for this Ivy League school. In addition to a History of the Class of 1881, Class Prophecy, and Class Poem, the yearbook contains much on school societies, clubs, and athletic teams. There is also a section on "Secret Fraternities" and caricatures of students and faculty members, plus humorous poetry etc. Even one of the advertisements at the end is a spoof: "A Good Looking Young Lady Wants to Secure a Husband from among the Members of the Graduating Class... N.B. -A tall gentleman, with muscular arm, and little side-whiskers preferred."
