The personal passport of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Karl Shapiro, which was issued April 18, 1984 and expired April 17, 1994. It bears Shapiro's signature, his handwritten New York City address, a tipped-in photographic portrait, and two ink passport stamps: one British and the other Italian. Accompanied by 66 personal checks written by Shapiro and his third wife, Sophie Wilkins, between 1989 and 1992. The payees include Poetry magazine, University of Chicago Press, New York Review of Books, and fellow poet Charles Guenther. Born in Baltimore, Shapiro attended the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University. He graduated in 1939 and served in the army for the duration of World War II. Shapiro's poetry began to be published during the war; while stationed in New Guinea, he would send poems home to his fianc√©e, who then had them printed.
