Issued by the Secretary of War, Simeon Cameron. Ownership copy of Peter M. Osborn of the famous 95th Regiment of New York State Volunteers, also known as the Warren Rifles. Signed by him with that identification in pencil and then again in ink on the flyleaf and the free rear endpaper in these latter cases listing along with the Warren Rifles the command of Col. Geo(rge) Biddle and Gen Burnside's Division, both Biddle and Burnside being famous Union commanders in the Civil War. A used unsophisticated copy, showing wear at the corners, its binding firm still. With the bookstore ticket of Lockwood 411 Broadway, lower right corner front pastedown. A Civil War troop artifact.

One of 1000 copies printed in Nov 1868, with the erratum slip at page 286-287. On page 97 is the erroneously numbered 7 (instead of 5 corrected later) and on page 224, line 3 of the second stanza is Thy (which in this copy has been corrected in pencil.) Green cloth with gilt-pressed willow upper and blind-stamped lower, gilt to spine, beveled edges. Some piercing of cloth upper right corner front and narrow surface loss at head and foot of spine. Ownership name in pencil dated January 1869 on fly. Pasted onto fly verso across from title is engraved portrait of Lowell from a later publication. Housed in a half-leather slipcase.
