Description:
London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1819 First edition, third Sherwood issue (Viets IV), with no author credited on the title page and without the references to Mary Godwin and Jane Clermont, and "lmost" to page 36. Finely bound in three-quarter red morocco, with two raised bands to the spine, boards ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, light marbled endpapers. Near fine, with only some light scattered spotting and foxing throughout, lacking the half-title and ads at rear. Overall, an attractive copy of the first vampire story in English literature. The Vampyre was originally published by Henry Colburn in the April 1, 1819 issue of New Monthly Magazine under the title "The Vampyre: A Tale by Lord Byron." Although the tale was in fact written by John William Polidori, Byron's physician, this false attribution was continued in the first book form, also by Henry Colburn. Colburn's first state, with himself as publisher and Byron credited as author, was suppressed and no… Read More

Internally, some toning and small tear, a minor repair to the last plate at page 623. A good, sturdy copy. Shepherd 78. Vanity Fair is the first novel Thackeray published under his own name and is widely considered one of his greatest achievements. Dublin: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1965 Illustrated by Edward Pagram. First edition, first printing. Publisher's yellow cloth, spine lettered in back, bookplate to front pastedown. A fine copy; in an unclipped dust jacket with some mild soiling and slight rubbing, else fine. Anthony Burgess' A Vision of Battlements, written in 1949 and published in 1965, was his first novel. Burgess wrote the book as a way to process his military service in Gibraltar, saying, "I was empty of music but itching to create. So I wrote this novel ... to see if I could clear my head of the dead weight of Gibraltar." Burgess uses his antihero Richard Ennis to satirize traditional ideas about the heroism of battle and the nobility of soldiers. Much of the character of Richard Ennis is based on Burgess himself. .
