[2] pp 16 [3 foldout plates] Scarce technical guide to the automatic vacuum brake which became almost universal on British rolling stock for a century from the 1870s onwards. Blue textured cloth over card wrappers, original sewing, first and last leaves detached. Three concertina-fold plates depicting the engine and railway carriages on glazed linen, semi-transparent paper. The vacuum brake seems to have been a joint effort between the London based company and the Manchester Gresham and Craven ironworks. Worldcat locates one copy only at the University of York, not in BL or elsewhere. Near Fine 1875

New York: Beaux Arts Editions, 1999. Hardcover. Fine. pp319 Large folio 28x36cm. A high quality art book published by Hugh Lauter Levin Associates. Exceptionally well illustrated including 300 colour plates and 60 black and white illustrations. There are chapters dedicated to Van Gogh's time in Arles, Saint-Remy and Auvers. The book is fine in tan boards with gold spine lettering and colour portrait of Van Gogh to upper cover; in a near fine blue heavy weight dust jacket showing only minor signs of handling. A splendid volume which was the final book by renowned designer Philip Grushkin. As this is a large and heavy item extra postage charges will apply. Fine 1999

Author's signature to title page, and inscription to John Baxter from Paris 2007 on ffep. With the author's joke dedication to "Boris Yeltsin" to half title page, reminding him to " take it easy on the vodka". A very nice copy. Fine 2006

London: The Hogarth Press, 1952. Hardcover. Good. pp 242 An inscribed reprint by the bush-man of Cheyne Walk with an autograph letter from the book's dedicatee, his second wife, laid in. The author has inscribed the book to John and Diana Webel, apparently as a wedding gift', referring to it as 'something born of my own marriage in the same year'. Laid in is a later letter from 1979 which is an effusive thank you note from Ingaret Van Der Post sent in gratitude for the return of a 'white coat', left behind at a signing event: 'I so enjoyed my husband's "signing books" lunch and I meet so many interesting people that I quite forgot my old coat.' The book does not have its jacket and the boards are faded, especially around the spine. Good 1952

Edinburgh: Canongate Publishing, 1982. pp 219 Paperback, first thus, poems selected by Australian poet Les A Murray from his earlier collections entitled The Ilex Tree, The Weatherboard Cathedral, Poems Against Economics, Lunch & Counter Lunch and Ethnic Radio. Very good, covers lightly scuffed and spine sunned, the pages are bright with no marks or ownership inscription. Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. Painter, novelist, playwright, poet and editor, Gray frequently combined his diverse artistic talents within single works to challenge existing forms. He has been described as 'Blending satire and tragedy, realism and fantasy, his work has been credited with spurring a renaissance in Scottish literature.' Putney Heath: Unpublished, 1909. Soft cover. Very Good. A folder of typescript translations of Euripides and Sophocles, and poems by Robert John Beadon, b.1844, who was a published author and colonial administrator. The covers are creased and chipped to the edges but the text is near fine. Inscribed "Minnie Pridham from R.J.B. June 1909", occasional annotations and additional manuscript verses of a poem 'Tanta Pei' to final leaf. Laid in letter (1ALS) to Minnie discussing possible publication of this "thin quarto", and a transcript of an English translation of Sophocles, Oedipus Koloneus 668-719, as found printed within the book. Oxford: Lion Publishing plc, 1998. The Biblical story of Daniel in the Lions Den retold for children. First paperback edition, signed to the half title page by the author and illustrator John Ryan. Fine in glossy illustrated covers showing only slight signs of handling. John Ryan (1921 – 2009) was a British animator and cartoonist, best remembered for his character Captain Pugwash which began as a comic strip which spawned books and a TV series which was animated by Ryan in real time using a system of cut-out characters and boats, moved by hidden cardboard levers. We have acquired Pugwash artwork and a collection of books at a recent sale of items from Ryan's estate. [pp] 100 Mid-Victorian young woman's album, probably by 'E Pitman' of Gosforth in Cumberland and Peckham in south London which bears testimony to Britain's internationalist outlook with its visiting cards from Berlin, drawing of a port in Anatolia, the plan of a house in Stuttgart, pressed flowers from Bex in Switzerland and two excellent 1860s albumen photographs of the Royal Naval School (now Goldsmith's College) close to Pitman's home in south London. Purple embossed boards (24x17cm) textured shiny endpapers and mixed coloured paper, all edges gilt. The contents which have been laid down on the album pages with some care include the visiting card - with inscription - of the novelist, Lady Emily Ponsonby, the visiting card of 'Selim Aga' (freed Sudanese slave who wrote an autobiography and accompanied Richard Burton on his African travels) and a signed card from 'Omer Effendi'. Washington DC: Le Gouvernement des Etats-Unis d'Amerique, 1943. Soft cover. Fine. A sixteen page illustrated life of FDR in cartoon format intended to boost French morale during the Second World War. This copy is fine, the colour is bright, the pages clean, no tears or marks as it has been protected by a stiff card pamphlet holder. This item comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 - 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R.. In 1969 he married his third wife who was a Swedish princess and with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to France explains the presence of his books in the United Kingdom. Fine 1943

London: A Strahan and T Cadell, 1787. Fourth edition in most attractive contemporary binding of half polished calf over marbled boards with morocco spine labels. Both volumes have the book label of 'T Barton' and laid in 3 armorial bookplates of 'Kerrison'. Volume I has lost the top 2cm of the title page where a previous owner has neatly removed an earlier ownership inscription. A clean fresh copy internally. Moore, a Scottish medic by training, wrote the letters after undertaking a Grand Tour in the company of the youthful 8th Duke of Argyll. 1787

Well illustrated in black and white within the text. In very good condition in publisher's pictorial cloth, a little rubbed and darkened but still very attractive. There is some foxing to the fore edge and a few pages. Faint ownership inscription to the half title page. Very Good 1883
