Description:
New York: George W. Harlan, 19 Park Place; J. Campbell, Printer, Vandewater Street, 1880. Square-back stapled book, (17 x 12.5 cm.), 128 pages. Index. FIRST EDITION. Author's first book, preceding the series of single-subject books published by Frederick Stokes for which he is more recognized. Murrey was the caterer of New York's Astor House and Philadelphia's Continental Hotel. The book is an amalgam of recipes for familiar New York and Philadelphia hotel fare, intermixed with articles pulled from various sources on subjects including baking powder, the glory of salads, why European versions of pies are inferior to the American, and the fabulous story of a meal of smoked shad, roast rump of salt beef, boiled potatoes, parsnip salad, home-made cheese, cold johnny-cake and acorn coffee, had while hunting in northwestern Minnesota, in the home of an old Down-East Yankee. Seeing that the meal lacked a salad, Murrey repaired to the woods, where he assembled a salad of dandelions, dock-leaves, milk-weed… Read More

A printed bill of fare for Vauxhall Royal Gardens, a dining establishment within the walls of Vauxhall Gardens, the London pleasure garden, founded in the mid-17th Century and originally named New Spring Garden. For two centuries it was one of the leading venues for public entertainment in London and featured tightrope walkers, hot-air balloon ascents, concerts and fireworks. The bill of fare features refreshments (a chicken, plate of collared beef, tart, cheesecake, heart cake, Shrewsbury cake, plate of olives, pot of stout, and a pair of wax lights). Salads seem to have been a thing, but elements (lemon, lettuce, cucumber, cruet of oil) were offered separately. "The Pastry and Confectionery are furnished by Mr. Farrance." The wine list offers Port, Sherry, Bucellas, Lisbon, Moselle, Teneriffe, Madeira, Sauterne, Barsac, Claret, Old Hock, Champagne, Burgundy, etc. Handwritten on… Read More

[Lynn, Mass: State Board of Health, 1888. Octavo (23.3 x 14.4 cm.), [1], 316-361 pages. Illustrated with nine plates printed in black, red, and gray, and numerous illustrations and charts in the text. FIRST EDITION in book form, reprinted from the Nineteenth Annual Report of the State Board of Health of Massachusetts, 1888. A study of school rooms heated with stoves in predominantly rural Massachusetts towns, with suggestions for method of increasing ventilation and addressing other related health concerns. The author reports that there were 3860 school buildings in Massachusetts heated by stoves, and recognized that it was unlikely that other current heating approaches, including central furnaces, forced steam, etc., could be applied in these rural circumstances. The illustrations depict floor plans, and one handsome elevation, of existing school rooms, while the plates chart measurements of air conditions within the various school rooms over the course of a day. The men include the bar or tavern keeper in jacket behind the bar, a waiter in white apron with a tray at the ready, and three customers: one warming his hands at the fire, another sporting a shot and apiece of currency, and the third astride a chair (backwards), but with his finger in the air making a point. Description:
Vineyard Haven: Falmouth Publishing of Falmouth, Mass, 1920. Octavo (23 x 15.5 cm), 48 pages. Advertisements. Index (actually a table of contents). FIRST EDITION. A community cookbook of two hundred eighty recipes, attributed in many cases to women with surnames still associated with the island's history, such as Downs, Bangs, Tilton, Chadwick, and Merrill. The title page includes the statement, "This class was organized by Mrs. Annie F. Lord in 1912". In evidence is the search for a footing along the continuum of acculturation: Hungarian Goulash, Mexican Rice, Dixie Spoon Bread, Russian Beet Soup, and Portuguese Fluffy Cake jostle for attention among "Old Island Recipes" such as Salt Codfish with Potatoes and Sea Moss Blanc-Mange, not to forget "Gay Head Specialities" from the lighthouse neighborhood, such as Chowder with pork and quahogs. A definitive dating seems elusive. An advertisement for a firm called Issokson's (page 14) places Vineyard Recipes after 1914, while another adjacent on the same… Read More
