[London]: Balue Printer, 38, Gracechurch Street, 1829. Tall broadside bill of fare (42 x 12.5 cm.), printed recto only. A printed bill of fare for Vauxhall Royal Gardens, a dining establishment within the walls of Vauxhall Gardens, the London pleasure garden, founded in the mid-17th Century and originally named New Spring Garden. For two centuries it was one of the leading venues for public entertainment in London and featured tightrope walkers, hot-air balloon ascents, concerts and fireworks. The bill of fare features refreshments (a chicken, plate of collared beef, tart, cheesecake, heart cake, Shrewsbury cake, plate of olives, pot of stout, and a pair of wax lights). Salads seem to have been a thing, but elements (lemon, lettuce, cucumber, cruet of oil) were offered separately. "The Pastry and Confectionery are furnished by Mr. Farrance." An important treatise on vegetable gardening, from the author of Amateur Fruit Growing, and a professor at the University of Minnesota. The instructions are appropriately for cold weather growing, written "for the growers of the Northern Mississippi Valley", at "the latitude of St. Paul and Minneapolis". The half-tone photographs are largely credited to R.S. Mackintosh, the author's assistant at the Experiment Station, although some were supplied by D. Landreth & Sons, seedsmen of Philadelphia. the work contains a good deal of detailed information on gardening for food, individual varieties, tools, insects and other pests, soil etc. One leaf dog-eared, covers of gilt-titled, green cloth binding bumped, otherwise a near fine copy. Constantiople; Athens, 1880. Three photographs mounted on card (each 9.5 x 6.5 cm.), labeled in ink on the versos. Three photographs of street food vendors: from Athens, a "seller of a species of cake: halva"; and from Constantinople, "an egg seller" and a "seller of a kind of cream named yoghurt". The images show each vendor in traditional garb, with the equipment of their trades, the egg vendor with a large basket on his back and smaller basket in front; the halve seller with a three-legged table with a mold; and the yogurt seller with an oblong basket and a pair of small, white ceramic bowls. Very light staining to edges of photos, otherwise very good.

Illustrated with nine plates printed in black, red, and gray, and numerous illustrations and charts in the text. FIRST EDITION in book form, reprinted from the Nineteenth Annual Report of the State Board of Health of Massachusetts, 1888. A study of school rooms heated with stoves in predominantly rural Massachusetts towns, with suggestions for method of increasing ventilation and addressing other related health concerns. The author reports that there were 3860 school buildings in Massachusetts heated by stoves, and recognized that it was unlikely that other current heating approaches, including central furnaces, forced steam, etc., could be applied in these rural circumstances. The illustrations depict floor plans, and one handsome elevation, of existing school rooms, while the plates chart measurements of air conditions within the various school rooms over the course of a day. [N.p. New England (?), 1890. Original photograph on board (16.3 x 22 cm.). Photographic print of tavern interior, with five men gathered around a bar and a wood or coal stove. The men include the bar or tavern keeper in jacket behind the bar, a waiter in white apron with a tray at the ready, and three customers: one warming his hands at the fire, another sporting a shot and apiece of currency, and the third astride a chair (backwards), but with his finger in the air making a point. The room is small, the ceiling low, and there are several broadsides on the wall. None of the broadsides are completely legible, but bits and pieces come through, "An Old Deceiver" with an image of a hog; another hog advertising an event on Monday, January [?] at the "St. James Hotel"; and Midw[inter...] in the East Ba... [at] Bishop's". Some light staining to the image and very light wear to the edges of the mounting board. Near fine.

Photographic print of a cafe or diner interior, with the proprietor seated at the counter on a stool, three servers standing behind the counter in white jackets. The menu includes "Pork 15c, Small Steak 15c, Rump Steak 20c, Ham & Eggs 20c, and the "Bill of Fare includes "Haddock" and "Steak Cod". Individual signs advertise "Cold Meats", "Mutton Pie", and "Brunet's Unexcelled Baked Beans". Most interesting is a sign reading "Daily People", the newspaper considered to be the first and only English daily Socialist newspaper published in the English-speaking world. Some rubbing and wear to surface of photo; adhesive mark to verso. Near very good.

[No place], 1939. Folded menu (12 x 16.5 cm.), 4 pages, plus wrapper. Manuscript menu for a dinner in honor of the winners of the fishing derby of a private club in an unidentified location. The menu includes the names of the new and previous champions, as well as the list of dishes served, along with two pieces of fishing doggerel. The wrapper includes a hand-drawn image of a fisherman's bag, with a chromolithograph image of a rainbow trout pasted-down. Tiny bit of soiling to the wrappers, otherwise fine.

Written in narrative style, and with a great deal of information about markets and restaurants. This book includes contemporary and older recipes from historical sources. A fine copy in a near very good dust jacket, with one small chip to the front panel.

Folder bound with ribbon (9.5" x 13.5"), 4 typed pages with table of contents, plus thirty-three original labels attached to sheets of paper with thin pins; seven letters from manufacturers and distributors; and one folding chart from the "Trademark Journal." A printed cover label, with details in ink, states, "High Court of Justice Chancery Division, Mr. Justice Cross, The 14th Day of Feb'y, 1967, Vine Products Ltd. v. Mackenzie & Co Ltd. This exhibit parked p. 30 was produced at the Trail of this Action on the examination of James Edward Mitchells, illegible)." A typed label inside the front cover states, "South African Wine Farmers Association (London) Ltd." A little light soil, overall very good.

Vineyard Haven: Falmouth Publishing of Falmouth, Mass, 1920. Octavo (23 x 15.5 cm), 48 pages. Advertisements. Index (actually a table of contents). FIRST EDITION. A community cookbook of two hundred eighty recipes, attributed in many cases to women with surnames still associated with the island's history, such as Downs, Bangs, Tilton, Chadwick, and Merrill. The title page includes the statement, "This class was organized by Mrs. Annie F. Lord in 1912". In evidence is the search for a footing along the continuum of acculturation: Hungarian Goulash, Mexican Rice, Dixie Spoon Bread, Russian Beet Soup, and Portuguese Fluffy Cake jostle for attention among "Old Island Recipes" such as Salt Codfish with Potatoes and Sea Moss Blanc-Mange, not to forget "Gay Head Specialities" from the lighthouse neighborhood, such as Chowder with pork and quahogs. A community cookbook, in service of the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. A historical sketch of the hospital explains that two new wings were added to the hospital in 1953, and that the year of this publication the operating suite was remodeled. Most recipes are attributed, and credit is given to the twelve illustrations and the cover illustrations. Internally clean; some creasing and light soil to the decorated card-stock boards. A product cookbook from the company that brought us Shredded Wheat. Almost every recipe, from Blueberry Shortcake to Welsh Rarebit, contains Shredded Wheat. The final leaf contains twelve images of interior views of "The Home of Shredded Wheat". Some edge wear, a few dog ears. Near fine except for a bit of edge wear; in color-printed wrapper, sewn with a hole for a cord.

These are rare volumes that cover topics related to viticulture and oenology, specifically wine production, but also include a report on federal protection to American commerce and a French price guide to historic coins and medals.
