Title page in both Marathi (?) and English, one page introduction in English, text in Marathi. Children's book written by Fuller (1851-1900), adapted and translated into Marathi from a book written by a Miss Small of the Free Church Mission at Poona. Jennie Frow Fuller was a native of Ohio, attended Oberlin College, and traveled to India to serve as a missionary in 1876. She served 3 years at Ellichpur, Berar. Returning to America, she married a college classmate, Marcus Fuller, in 1881. They both served at Akola, Berar as missionaries. From 1892 they served as superintendents of the Alliance Mission in Bombay. Jennie Fuller died of cholera in 1900. This book a presentation copy, with the inscription "Dear Mrs. Spence, with Jennie Fuller's Love. Mar. 21, 88." Very Scarce title. No marks in book, binding tight. Based on the events surrounding the death of Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877), and possibly written by his second son, Cornelius Jeremiah Vanderbilt, who contested the will that left the bulk of the estate to his older brother William. From The Literary World, November 5, 1880: this book is "an attack upon the Vanderbilt family...Two Boston printers declined to print or publish it through fear of suits for libel; and one of them destroyed the stereotype plates prepared for its production." Vervolg Van't Leven van Philopater is the second part of a satirical novel the first part of which, Het Leven van Philopater, was written by Duijkerius (1662-1702) and published in 1691. This novel dealt with the theological conflict between the Voetians and Cocceians, and subtly promoted the philosophy of Spinoza. When the second part was published in 1697, strongly endorsing the philosophy of Spinoza, , it created an outrage that led to the arrest of both Duijkerius and Wolsgryn and the banning of the book in Holland and Friesland.
