XII, 192 pp.Rare second edition of "the first general (as distinguished from hospital) 'pharmacopoeia' compiled by an American" (Cowen), first published at Paris in 1798. The first part of the book is a classification of diseases, and is taken word for word from the influential 1769 nosology by the Scottish physician William Cullen. The second part is a pharmacopoeia, divided into materia medica and composite medicines. The introduction notes that it is based on the author's notes made at the University of Edinburgh, the London pharmacopoeia and Joseph Townsend's The physicians' vade mecum (1794) (p. x). Wagenaar wrote the first complete overview of the entire history of the Low Countries, from "the earliest times" up to 1751, two years after the first printing of the first volume appeared. His aim was to provide the general Dutch public with an impartial and objective general history of their "fatherland" to promote active and morally correct citizenship. It remained a leading work on Dutch national history to the end of the 19th century.The present set was bound by the so-called parrot bindery in Utrecht, perhaps initially ca. 1758, since volumes 1-18 (1752-1758) are uniform but volumes 19-21 (1758-1759) form a minor variant. We have not succeeded in identifying the artist of these beautiful drawings. We know no other drawing that is clearly from the same hand. Two artists are mentioned as possible candidates, Govert Flinck (Cleves 1615-1660 Amsterdam) and Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621 - Amsterdam - 1674). The present drawings are probably made around the middle of the 17th century in Holland. The composition is similar to some papers in florilegia, such as Theodor de Bry (1611/1612 to 1641 and later), but they never show so many species and the flowers on a sheet. [1], 104 engraved ll.Rare complete set of Stradanus's magnificent series of 104 large hunting prints, including falconry, fishing and even bee-keeping, engraved in the years 1578 to ca. 1596 by Philips Galle and others associated with him. It includes scenes of catching birds of prey and of hunting with them, not only hawks or falcons, but also owls. The other hunting prints show the hunting of elephants, various wild cats, wild boars, bears, crocodiles and other big game, apes (putting on boots!), smaller animals such as rabbits, badgers and porcupines, but also unicorns, fauns (playing pan-pipes!), giant snakes, dragons, sea monsters and other mythical creatures. 8 pp.First and only edition of a 1672 political pamphlet in the form of a spin-off from Henry Neville's very popular 1668 story of a voyage to the imaginary utopian/dystopian Isle of Pines. The present story is written as a conversation between three militia men on watch discussing the turbulent politics of 1672. One tells of his (fictitious) voyage and several years residence on a (fictitious) utopian island called Mallanbruino in the South Pacific. He says it is one degree south of the Isle of Pines. On Mallanbruino, the industrious people were oppressed by an emperor but rose up and defeated him with help from a prince, who also replaced the evil regents. They note the remarkable similarities to events in the Dutch Republic. The island then set up a new and fairer democratic representative political system, bringing peace and happiness to the island. Two of the voyages were in company with Jan Huygen van Linschoten. Gerrit de Veer, the author of this book and close friend of Willem Baretsz., had taken part in the second and third voyage. [4], 72 pp.First edition of a thorough text book on perspective, teaching in a clear and succinct way the basic theories as well as all possible practical use of the art of perspective in art, architecture, the theatre, etc. by Hendrik van Houten (fl. 1705). The manual is richly illustrated, giving numerous examples of perspective drawings for different purposes, for example the drawing of plane figures and the drawing of three-dimensional objects, but including hanging objects and objects that are or aren't parallel to the baseline. He also gives instructions on the best way to draw shadows created by sun- or candlelight. Van Houten also explains how to make a perspective drawing a gallery or something similar that is only viewed from below. It was written as a defence of the Dutch tradition of shipbuilding against the upcoming tendency to look to the French and English traditions. Added at the end is a short treatise on the construction of Dutch merchant ships by C. de Ruiter. The second deals with right-angled spherical triangles and the third with differently angled spherical triangles. The fourth and fifth chapter deals with the finding and composition of formulas. Most of the book is based on the treatise by the otherwise unknown Geerard ter Brugge or Gerard ter Brugghen (described as a an outstanding master of the colourist’s sart) sometimes thought to be a pseudonym for Marcus Gheeraerts the elder or younger), originally published as Verlichtery kunst-boeck in 1616, which went through further editions in 1634 and 1667. The Middelburg publisher Willem Goeree revised and expanded Ter Brugge’s treatise and published it under Ter Brugge’s name in 1668, further revising it for his second edition, still under Ter Brugge’s name in 1670 and again for the present third published by Van den Dalen in 1697. A large engraved map of what is now North Holland, showing its situation largely as it was in 1575, but with some revisions made in 1608. It is the most detailed map to show this region before the major drainage projects that began early in the seventeenth century. At a scale of about 1:82,000, it covers all but the northernmost tip of North Holland, from De Zijp in the North to Leiden and Utrecht in the south, including Haarlem, Amsterdam and Edam. It shows not only canals, inland seas, cities and towns (most represented by their churches, though other buildings or fortifications are sometimes depicted), dozens of boats and ships in the water, dunes and other topographic features, but also roads and paths, not included in Van Deventer’s 1542 map or the other major early maps.
