Prague: Aventinum,, 1922. A beautiful copy of apek's uncommon play First edition, first printing, of apek's uncommon satirical play on the theme of longevity. First performed on 21 November 1922 in the Vinohrady Theatre in Prague, the play was later produced in translation at the Arts Theatre in London, under the name The Macropulos Secret, on 8 July 1930. The work also served as the source for Leoš Janá ek's penultimate opera, The Makropulos Case; Janá ek saw the play in December 1922 and soon began a correspondence with apek to discuss the adaptation, which premiered at the National Theatre in Brno on 18 December 1926. Octavo. Original patterned paper wrappers, titles to spine in black, edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom green cloth flat-backed box. Wrappers designed by Josef apek. Text in Czech. Despite a seemingly generous print run of 10,000 copies, we have traced just 7 locations via WorldCat and other copies have not been previously encountered in commerce. This album marks a warm period in Sino-Soviet relations before ideological and geopolitical tensions derailed the cause of global fraternal communism. Konstantin Finogenov (1902-1989) was a Soviet propaganda artist and holder of the Stalin Prize of the second degree, making him a natural participant in the 1949 delegation. Unsurprisingly, his drawings glorify the Chinese Communist Party's cause, accentuate the noble pains and sacrifices required when making revolution, and stress the excitement accompanying the arrival of "New China". Amsterdam, Atlas Novus. , 1635. Highly decorative map centered on Valencia and extending south to Murcia and Orihuella and North to the Cenia by the famous Dutch cartographer Blaeu. Map embellished with sea monster, ships, rhumb lines emanating from compass rose and ornate title cartouche with the arms of Valencia. The map is very detailed and gives many place names, smaller villages or settlements. Dutch text to verso. Joan (John) Bleau (1596-1673) was a son of a famous Dutch cartographer, Willem Janzoon Bleau, and he shared his father's passion and continued his work. Joan Bleau's 'Atlas Maior' is one of the most extraordinary works within this category ever produced. It is known for its exquisite engraving, calligraphy and colouring as well as heraldic detail, pictorial work and the intricate cartouches, which all amounted to the appeal of this work. The map is very detailed and gives many place names, smaller villages or settlements. Latin text to verso. The map provides us with many details, like place names of cities and villages, castles and monastries, rivers, lakes, woods and mountains. Although it is often difficult to distinguish between Jansson and Blaeu, the compass, the lettering and the coats of arms suggest Jansson. (Moreton and Bannister, p304) Copper engraving. Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius., 1616. Very attractive little map of the province of Valencia, surrounded by Murcia, Castilia and Arragon. Petrus Bertius was a professor of mathematics and librarian at Leyden University. As well as being a prolific writer on mathematical, historical and theological subjects he is known as a cartographer for his editions of Ptolemy's Geographia. In 1618 he moved to Paris and became Official Cosmographer to Louis XIII. He was related by marriage to Jodocus Hondius and Pieter van den Keere. Copper engraving. Later colour. Atlas Geographus., c1730. An interesting and decorative map showing Europe, Asia and northern Africa surrounded by eight compass points worth of windheads, most likely by Christophorus Cellarius. The title translates to "Old World Climates according to Strabo". Strabo was a renowned geographical scholar who lived between c.63 B.C. and c.23 A.D. Of particular interest is 'Aquilo,' the north wind, characterized as a winged dog held in check by a chain leash, grasped by a Neptune-like figure seated on an immense, hollowed out rock at the North Pole. Behind barred openings in the rock are more chained creatures, possibly representing frigid storms waiting to be released at the whim of the gods. Copper engraving. Later colour. Histoire Generale des Voyages., 1764. Interesting set of two local town plans in the province of Shanxi, China. Bellin was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy upon the creation of France's hydrographic office, the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine.Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps and charts. Munich., c1700. A fascinating map of central Africa purporting to explain the source of the Nile. It shows two large central African lakes- Lac Zaflan and Lac Zaire, out of which flow not only the Nile but also the Zaire river and the Niger. An ornate cartouche at lower left, shows a spring- 'Nili Fontes', with two reclining figures watching two streams emerge, one called 'Niger' the other 'Albus' that mix together into the larger stream-Nilus- in which a crocodile swims. Ships and sea monsters at sea. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Fine condition. Size: 34.5 x 23.5 cm. (13½ x 9½ inches).

Paris: Voyage Pittoresque de la Grece,, 1782. A pair of engravings - the top showing a group of travellers with their horses resting by the imposing mountain at St. Etienne. The bottom engraving shows details of two classical statues, a colonnade and part of a tomb. In 1776 Choiseul-Gouffier and the artist J.B. Hilaire joined a cartographic survey of the Mediterranean. Volume I of Voyage Pittoresque, his account of their tour of the Greek islands, the coast of Asia Minor, and of his travels on the mainland, was immediately acclaimed on publication in 1778. According to Brunet, it was incontestably the most beautiful production of this kind seen until then. Choiseul-Gouffier's work offered for the first time, illustrations of remote places that complemented the scrupulously researched narrative. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. He was shipwrecked in 1788 but his narrative, maps, and views survived and were published in 1797.
