John Russell Prescott (1924-2011), was appointed Professor of Physics at the University of Adelaide in 1971, and from 1982 until his retirement in 1990 he was Elder Professor of Physics. 'His main research interest was in cosmic rays, and he founded the cosmic ray research group at the University of Adelaide.... While helping excavate at Roonka on the Murray, he decided to apply his knowledge of physics to archaeology, using the new technique of thermoluminescence dating. He set up a laboratory and luminescence soon began to dominate his academic research, particularly after his notional retirement in 1990. London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1975. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. London, Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1975 (second edition)/ 1959. Quarto; cloth lightly rubbed; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper a little mottled and slightly creased and torn. 'Dr Yates describes how the tapestries arose out of Catherine de' Medici's marvellous series of festivals at the court of the Valois in the sixteenth century which were intended to bring together hostile religious factions in an attempt at 'politique' conciliation. The festivals were, however, constantly interrupted by renewd outbreaks of the French wars of religion; indeed, the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew began during a festival'.

Large quarto, [viii], 392 pages, with hundreds of illustrations (many from photographs, some in colour). Papered boards; a fine copy with the fine dustwrapper. 'Drawing on the work of the many who have written on the subject previously, "Valour and Violets" provides a wholly South Australian perspective on the impact of the Great War on individuals, on families and on our state's coastal, regional, and outback communities. "Valour and Violets" brings together for the first time the stories of the campaigns and battles in which South Australians served, set against the backdrop of the South Australian home front. Here are the stories of Frederick Prentice, the first of three Indigenous South Australians to be awarded the Military Medal; Thomas Baker, the gunner who became an ace pilot; and Sister Margaret Graham, awarded the Royal Red Cross for her contribution to army nursing. Here too are lesser…
