London: William Brown & Co., 1899. First edition, oblong 4to (22 x 28 cm approx), pp.60, many illustrations to text, 2 maps. A very good copy bound in somewhat soiled original cloth, rebacked with later cloth spine. An attractive illustrated account of what is now Sabah, compiled by the British North Borneo Company to promote investment in the state. The text details the Company's progress in North Borneo since 1882, with a brief history, geographical notes, and an outline of the region's resources and population. There is a detailed note on a proposed railway, with comparison to the railway recently constructed in Selangor. The final section lists all of the Company's officers, from the Court of Directors to the Protector of Chinese, N.B. Dennys and two postmasters, one at Sandakan and the other at Labuan. Letters took one month to reach Britain; telegrams could be sent more expeditiously. This directory of Company officers includes two pages of photographic portraits of the…

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1824. First English edition, 8vo, pp.xi, [1, blank], 368 - (371)-2. A very good copy bound in dyed contemporary half leather, buckram boards, all edges speckled blue and red. Light rubbing to extremities of boards, light foxing to first and last few leaves. This account of an American voyage to Saigon in 1819-20 was called "a minor treasure of early nineteenth century travel literature on South East Asia" by Milton Osborne in his introduction to the Oxford in Asia Historical Reprint. This work captivating because it was written by a self-described "unlettered seaman", the author being a Lieutenant in the US Navy, who intended for his writing to be "deposited in the archives of the "East India Marine Society of Salem"" and was only published once his friends convinced him it would be of interest to the general reader. Alongside intriguing insights into Saigon and the surrounding regions including Batavia…

London: Black, Parbury, and Allen, 1817. First edition, 8vo, pp.[xvi], 577, [1], blank, 26 tables, large hand-coloured folding map, 51 x 32 cm. A good complete copy bound in modern imitation leather. Text foxed, final leaves preserved in Japanese tissue. Map in very good condition, with one short split and a few paper repairs to reverse. A valuable, comprehensive description of the economic state of the island of Ceylon in the early years of British administration. Anthony Bertolacci (1776-1833), a Corsican, served in the Ceylon civil service from 1798 to 1814, rising to Controller General of Customs and Auditor General. This was the first economic history of Ceylon to be published, and benefits from Bertolacci's decades of first-hand experience of the island's financial administration. Although our copy of the book has suffered from long residence in the climate of Ceylon, the large folding map, A new map of the island of Ceylon, compiled by Captain Schneider, Colombo, 1813, and printed by…
