Paris: Verve, Rue Ferou, 1939. First Edition. This issue includes lithograph images of 'The Dance' by Henri Matisse and 'The Garden of Allah' by Andre Derain. This copy is in a remarkable hardcover leather binding with inlaid green and yellow leather spelling 'Verve' on the front board. The back board features the same design in relief with the lettering and pattern laid under the outer black leather cover. The original colour lithograph wrappers have been retained and now form the paste-down endpapers of the book. The previous owner and binder, one Richard Griffin of Sydney New South Wales, has written an honest and endearing explanation of his project on the rear blank free endpaper: 'This is the first leather binding I ever attempted. Having to give up the grog left me with long lucid evenings to be filled instead." A unique and remarkable binding production. Large quarto, lithograph and heliotype plates throughout, black leather binding with fitted slipcase, this copy is in very good condition.

Paris: Tolmer, 1924. First Edition. An outstanding French children's book of the 1920s and an unusually bold and daring example of pochoir design. Edy Legrand (1892-1970) was a leading illustrator of the Art Deco era, renowned for challenging traditional notions of children's book design. This folio, celebrating the great French explorers of the Pacific and Americas, was printed using the pochoir method of multiple colour stencilling guards. The resulting images are remarkable for their strong lines and vivid colouration. A prolific artist, Legrand illustrated a wide range of material including Don Quixote, The Three Musketeers and Dante's Inferno. Nonetheless, his children's books - remarkable for their blend of naïveté and confident design - are considered his most enduring productions. Quarto, profusely illustrated with engraved plates throughout, original blue cloth; the top-edge of the front board is a bit sunned, yet a very good and crisp copy in a worn dust-jacket.

Lyon: Giraud et Rivoire, 1930. First Edition. Vintage Bayard fashion catalogue from a purveyor by the name of Paul Millet on Rue des Oiseaux in Montceau-les-Mines, France. Octavo, bound in illustrated paper wrappers, 10 pages, 10 full-page colour illustrations, light embrowning to covers, 2 mm closed tears to front cover, 50 mm closed tear to back cover, in very good condition otherwise.
