Westport, Connecticut: The Tiger's Eye Publishing Company, 1949. 9 issues all published. 4to. Original color printed wrappers; spine edges rubbed, with a few minor repairs, and a few pieces missing, otherwise sound and attractive. First edition of this highly regarded art and literary magazine edited by Ruth and John Stephan, which became the voice for abstract expressionism, surrealism, and the Latin American avant-garde in the United States. Blending the prose and images of post WWII artists like Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Stanley William Hayter, Pablo Picasso, Rufino Tamayo and Anne Ryan, to name a few, the Tiger's Eye became the visual forum for the "new". In a review of an exhibition on the Stephans at Yale University in 2002 Roberta Smith of the NY Times wrote, "the magazine, which took its title from William Blake, was one of the few that 'took visual art as seriously as literature.' It was also an eccentric mom-and-pop operation, put together with love, sophistication and a fair amount…

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2003. 8vo. 240 x 140 mm., [9 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches]. [viii], 291, [23] pp. Publisher's brown boards, red spine, dust jacket. Near fine copy. Well researched and documented story of the love affair of Di Robilant's ancestor Andrea Memmo, one of the last great Venetian statesmen, and the English women Giustiniana Wynne. The novel, set in 18th century Venice, is based on a trove of letters that were found in the author's home on the Grand Canal by his father. Using the text of the letters and his understanding of Venetian history, Di Robilant tells the story of this affair and its consequences on both his ancestor and Giustiniana Wynne. The letters are beautifully written and gives the novel an authenticity unusual for this genre of literature. .

Ferrara: ex typographia Francisci Pomatelli, 1788. 8vo. 200 x 140 mm., (8 x 5/1/2 inches). xvi, 200 pp. Twentieth century vellum over boards, title in ink on spine; title-page remargined, a few paper repairs in the text. First edition. In 1767, after nearly a century in Bolivia and Peru, the Jesuits were expelled and many of the brethren returned to Italy. This book by Prat de Saba provides vital information both on the lives of the Jesuits but also of the Moxos Indian Tribe which they converted to Catholicism. Each of the fifteen biographies include information on the background of each man, their education, and investiture into the Soceity, as well as descriptions of their previous assignment before going to South America. In addition, there is much information on the social structure of the Moxos…

(Reamstown, Pa.): Peter Montelius, 1821. Broadside. 185 x 150 mm., [7 ¼ x 6 inches]. Housed in a wooden frame and appears to be mounted on a piece of paper or board. Paper stock brown with age. Very good copy. First and only edition of Peter Montelius, devotional hymn on the divinity of Christ as the Son of God. Written in ten five-line stanzas, the song begins " We sing to you Emmanuel" was faithfully adapted from "Wir singen dir, Immanuel" composed in the 1650's by the Lutheran theologian and hymn written Paul Gerhardt. Some of Gerhardt's hymns were used by J. B. Bach in his chorale cantatas. The printer of this broadside was Peter Montelius, a school teacher, whose parents emigrated to Pennsylvania from Upper Saxony, not far from the home of Paul Gerhart. "Peter Montelius was a German-language schoolmaster all his adult life and served as organist and chorister at various churches whose schools he taught. But he is remembered…
