Philadelphia: T.K. and P.G. Collins, Printers, 1852. 16pp. Pamphlet. Removed. Lacking wrappers; minor foxing; very good. Graduation address or valedictory given by Dr. Thomas D. Mitchell, Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine at the Philadelphia College of Medicine: "But the most important item at which I have hinted, as related to the true dignity of the profession, is the reception and instruction of office pupils. Every village and rural district has its young men who aspire to Esculapian honors, and hence the certainty of applications to you, in this behalf. Let me express my deep, abiding conviction, that you can do more to elevate the profession, just at this point, than by all other expedients combined. (p9)" "The Philadelphia College of Medicine had its origins in the Philadelphia School of Anatomy, which was established by James McClintock in 1838. Stuttgart [Germany]: Druck von Carl Hauber, 1856. 16pp. Pamphlet. 5½ x 4¼ inches. Self wrappers; stitched; with blue/green paper spine reinforcement. Brief foxing; creasing at one corner; very good. Unrecorded homeopathic medical tract-whose title roughly translates as "Rules of Conduct during a Homeopathic Treatment." It was written by Dr. Arthur Lutze (1813-1870), an important homeopathic physician and contemporary of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), the founder of this pseudo-scientific system of alternative medicine that used very particular animal, vegetable, and mineral preparations to cure various diseases. A year before this tract was published, in 1855, Dr. Lutze opened a homeopathic clinic and spa in Köthen (Saxony-Anhalt) complete with large wards and private rooms, spas, and other amenities. Present here are 25 dietary and health rules to be followed during a homeopathic treatment. Strictly forbidden foods include coffee, tea, strong Bavarian beer, wine, schnaps, rum etc., and… Read More

[Germany. Verlag Gustav Kiepenheuer. 1918]. Lithograph. One of 125 copies printed. Signed lower right, in pencil, by the artist. Overall sheet size 16 x 12 inches. Blind-stamped at lower left: "Die Schaffenden," Unconserved: toned; various creasing; short tears to margins; several small perimeter paper losses; good. A large print from Die Schaffenden, a periodical in portfolio format, by the LGBT German artist Milly Steger (1881-1948) featuring an expressive, dynamic composition with multiple nude figures intertwined. The abstracted figures with distorted limbs and faces amplify the artwork's dramatic turmoil, suggesting a theme of human struggle. Born Emilie Sibilla Elisabeth Johanna Steger, the German sculptor Milly Steger honed her craft at the Düsseldorf Academy under Karl Janssen before joining Berlin's thriving artistic milieu, subsequently teaching at the Women's Academy at the Society of Berlin Artists. Her sculptures, often grand and female-centric, drew from Art Nouveau and Expressionism,… Read More

Description:
Np, c.1860s-1870s. Miniature or "Gem" Tintype mounted in verso of a Calling Card. Image: Approx. 1 x ¾ inches; card: approx. 2½ x 3¾ inches. Gilt paper "frame" surrounding image. Recto of card imprinted with the name "Mrs. John Mowle." Very good. Miniature tintype photographs, also called "gem" photos for their diminutive size, were a popular and inexpensive photographic format in the Victorian era. Here a portrait of youthful Mrs. John Mowle is conjoined with another Victorian custom of calling cards. Mrs. Mowle is wearing a black dress with a white collar and dark jewelry, possibly in mourning for a young child. Under magnification, the uneven edges and lacy look of her earrings and choker suggest that they are examples of hair jewelry. This calling card is clever and personal gift of friendship from a young woman and an unusual exemplar of photographically illustrated ephemera.
