Hard Cover. Good. An apparently unpublished xerox index for this monumental work (at least under this title). Cloth spine over paper boards. 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Contains the title page, 3 blank pages, followed by 7 xerox pages, each apparently an index with 3 unlabeled columns per page. First column is probably the place (Antwerpen, Augsburg, Basel, Berlin, Blaubeuren, Breslau, etc). Second is the artist/designer/compiler (a guess on our part, not labeled) - M. van der Goes, Johan Bamler, Peter Berger, Johann Blaubirer, B. Richel etc etc. Third column notes Taf (Plate) and either a single plate or plate range. So one entry is: "Burgos, Fr. Biel, Taf. 53-56" and another "Coln Joh. de Bel, Taf. 59". We find no listing for this item in OCLC/Worldcat. Whether a unique item or not is difficult to say. Images available on request. Hard Cover.

Inside black border dimensions (the main image without title) are 22 x 33.9 cm. The top edge has been remargined with sympathetic laid paper where the imprint was trimmed away. "Taylor sculp." engraved lower right. Now laid down archivally on a light tissue to preserve it and ensure that previous edge tears and fraying didn't cause further deteriorate. Lightly hand colored. A penciled note on the rear reads "opposite p. 577, Cooks' Voyages, 1785 edition" "Drawn by John Webber, the artist on Cook's third voyage, this view depicts the bay where Cook's expedition spent a total of four weeks in January and February 1779. Published as an illustration in the official narrative of Cook's third voyage, this view complements the detailed plan of the bay that appeared as an inset on the published map of the island. Apparently inscribed by author and daguerreian James F. Ryder on the front flyleaf: "Percival Calverts(?) I am Very Truly Yours" in dark ink. There are some discrepancies between this signature and the one underneath the frontis (a printed signature) but given that Ryder would have been 76 years old by this point and working with chemicals much of his life in photography it could very well be "right". Troy, N.Y.: W. & L. E. Gurley, 1899. Very Good. Roughly 5 7/8 inches square. Cellulite volvelle with brass grommet. Surface scuffing from use. Front with volvelle, rear with great illustration of surveying instrument and table below. A nice advertising piece for surveying instrument manufacturer Gurley, and useful besides. Inside ring is labeled Difference of Elevation. We have also seen this device offered as part of a pamphlet in a paper format. This format is far more useful for the surveyor's bag and no doubt was a response to customers interested in its use. A wonderfully graphic example of a working surveyor's tool. Includes directions for use. While at first glance 1899 might seem early for the use of the term "computer" applied to an object instead of a person, the term was first used on a volvelle by Aaron Palmer in 1843.
